Runner's 'Snots'

I know there is a rather wittily named Training Log called 'Runner's Trots' but this is more of the nasal variety!! I've been running about 8 months and every bloody time I run I have to blow my nose about 20 times, what is that all about? I see blokes running who do the finger to the side of nose and blow technique but I am a lady and when I tried that on Sunday it was not pleasant...(and discovered some yucky nosegoo on my leg when I got into the car :o)

    Any tips?

I'm not very good at shooting snot-rockets, so for longer runs, I usually take a couple of pieces of kitchen paper. They have sooo many uses. :)
Else I just grab a leaf off a hedge, (back to nature like!) blow, and chuck it.. Very bio-degradable!

Good snotting technique takes work and dedication. I go for the 4 step approach myself-
    1- inhale deeply
2- apply index finger to the opposite nostril (this step is crucial)
3- forcefully expel the snot. Any direction away from the body is acceptable. Give this step everything. Half-hearted attempts lead to body/mucus interfacing.
4- Not essential, but a comment rounds off the performance well. "That's better" is a good beginner's one, but after a few months you could move on to "Leave it out!" or "Going once, going twice" or whatever works for you.

As for training- might I recommend one recovery snot, two interval/speed snots and a long slow snot each week.

    Hope that helps.

When I was in school I used to do a lot of running and cycling and once I got into it, as in tired but keep going , I used to get the snot thing. I thought I was the only one lol. just wipe it and carry on.
If it was a bad one, I would more or less snort it and spit it out. without being horrible it does sound sick and sometimes ya get the snotty throat taste but just spit it out.

I'm really sorry for dragging this thread back up - but this is the main problem I have with running. I would be blowing my nose all the way along. Without being too descriptive its not even the stuff in my nose that is the problem but feel like I am being choked by it going down my throat :o

Apart from bringing out a packet of tissues and constantly blowing (which doesnt actually help with the discomfort), anyone got any ideas of what might help? If it wasn't such a problem I'd say I'd be able to go for a good bit longer than I can usually.

Not sure of the nutritional value of mucus, if it is happening to a great extent you might have to SIU.
I suffer from sinitus so during winter and in tree pollen season runs my nose is like a tap, so I've perfected MrCrestote's technique to fine art.
Check your dairy intake as this can have an impact and when I get particularly bad I take an over the counter remedy like Sudafed (take medicines at your own risk or after consulting your GP).

As far as I know pseudoephedrine (a common constituent of OTC cold remedies) is still on WADA banned list as a performance enhancing drug, so be careful if you are competing at any level that could require a test!

If I remember correctly an Irish athlete was disqualified for a postive test at the world masters, a few years ago.

If it's in your throat just discreetly spit...

Might give the old Sudafed a go - I could do with all the performance enhancements I can get :D

    Sorry again for the TMI

On race days I check my blind spot before Step 2... unless you are defending a lead.
