Dell charger problems

Have my Dell for nearly 3 years and recently it has stopped charging the bbattery, or will start charging after I disconnect and re-connect it a few times from the mains.. Have my Dell for nearly 3 years and recently it has stopped charging the bbattery, or will start charging after I disconnect and re-connect it a few times from the mains..

When I re-connect, an error message appears:

Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation.

Then I click ok and its running off the mains...

Have I destroyed my battery?

ANy help/ideas....
