I dont think it has climate control. Is that a mistake in the advert or does it have climate control?

Nct is due, and you can do the NCT 3 months early. So get them to do the NCT, and then, looks like good value.

yeah i know thats the only thing but other then that it looks fair enough.

Have you been talking to them? Will they do the NCT for you? I had a 99 and 00 Polo, and I can't remember any outstanding problems with them.

Highly unlikely on a 1.0 Polo. Hot and cold air perhaps but not c.c. :D

You don't sign a contract to buy when you ring some one. Could be worth sussing them out.

Had one of them as my first car, 1litre as well, twas grand, spacious enough for a wee car and felt like a good quality car compared to other small cars (punto, 106 etc). Never gave me trouble(apart from engine replacement, that was my fault though) Looks nice too

if you ask me you should look at each car with the following in mind

    Quality
    Universal opinions of the car
    Effiency
    Economically
Fairness in dealing with the dealers.

You'd look at a VW for the badge and overall perception of quality. Other than that they are appalling.

That generation of Polo was a nice looking car, far better than the current version IMO. But the 1.0 petrol in it is chronic! If I recall correctly, its just a 3-cylinder, and is sloooooowww...

Deffo doesn't have climate control, that's a cast iron certainty!

The Polo is a smashing little car. It feels really robust for it's size. And VWs tend to have really good resale.

That car is a 4-cylinder, I have one myself. A much better engine than the 1.2 3-cylinder in the 2002- Polos. Also, I find mine runs a lot smoother on Maxol E5 Petrol. If you're doing motorway driving you'll have live with a screaming engine, 4000rpm to get to 75mph. Will do 90-95mph if you have the time and courage :)

It's very slow, but that's what you expect. Don't be fooled by the 1.4 8v either, it's not 40% quicker

Nothing looks out of place in that car - just the aftermarket radio. The original would have been a tape deck anyway

    Common faults:

Worn out gearbox (whining noises etc, more common in the faster Polos tho)
Hard to get it into reverse from gears other than 1st
Pedal box has a weak weld (you won't know about this til the weld is about to break tho)
Lots of them idle poorly due to dirty throttle bodies or a worn out coolant temperature sender (both easy fixes)

A great car though, had 4 1994-2002 Polos in the family, had no trouble at all with them. Strong car too, had a head-on in Polo #2

Edit: you'll need to spend €400 if the timing belt and water pump haven't been replaced - should have been done at 60,000 miles

Get them to NCT it defo as a condition of sale, tax would depend on if the car is in use or not really. If it isn't they probably wont. But you'll get a few quid off that price more than likely so that should cover some tax

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,824 ✭✭✭ShooterSF

I'd suggest to them to nct it. Even if you don't buy it'll make the car more attractive to perspective buyers given the current fear of not having a current nct.Tax can be used to negotiate the price a little anyway.
