Petrol engine - flooded?

Right, heading to work on Sat at around 9:30, lashing rain, been raining all night, some flooding on the road I use. I avoided it as much as I could but one area was fairly bad (road flooded whole way across road) lots of cars coming other way so I pulled into middle of road as much as I could but ended up/had to go through some flooding - my little '98 opel corsa died ten minutes later....... :(

I rang the AA, guy came out - brought it back to my house and said to wait until the next day and try it then - it just needed to dry out - he didn't even open the bonnet! I know diesel engines can be damaged by water/floods but does this sound normal/right for a petrol car? I have gone through worse floods in the car before! I havn't been able to try the car since - Im in Dublin (sick), its in Carlow... :-( Do ye think all we be ok when I do try it or will I be going car shopping....?

Might be an electrical fault. If the engine had sucked up water, it would've died immediately. WD40 around any low hanging cabling... around the coils and sparkplugs, and maybe on the oxygen sensors. Check your fuses aswell.
