How much maintenance on a T2?

    Looking about for our first campervan, of course we'd love a T2

    Is there much maintenance involved with them? and what are they like for parts etc?

    That really depends on what condition you buy it in.

    On a totally sorted, repair-backlog free, semi- or totally restored example you'd probably get away for 2-3 years with just doing oil changes.

    One word RUST. Gearboxes can be a problem are hard to come by and some of the gearbox bearings are currently out of production. Avoid the 1700cc air cooled like the plague. If you don't like cruising at 55mph, and climbing hills at 30mph a t2 is not for you. We just gave ours away to a kid starting college two weeks ago.
    As with any vehicle of a certain age every rubber will have rotten and need replacing. It depends on how much work the previous owner has done. If you really want a t2 then check out the type2ireland.org forum and they will point you in the direction of an honest sales person.
    There is no such thing as a bargain in vw land they are three times the price of the equivalent vehicle in another make. If its cheap it needs lots of work. If you think it needs 1000 euro worth of body work it probably needs 3000 euro worth of new panel, welding. etc.
