Anyone got any opinions on this car?

A girl at work is going to look at it today. Advice and opinions would be good.

    Thanks

They are pretty reliable but the 1.4 engine is too underpowered for me. She should try and go for the 1.9TDI (Far better engine imo)

She wouldn't get insurance on a 1.9 I'd say. Also there wouldn't be too much long distance driving

they are nice... wont break a land speed record but Heep's of storage... good maintenance and its just as reliable as any competition

Its fine, the previous poster mentioned its underpowered & he is correct.
However it all depends on what the user wants to get from it.

Its quite reliable, safety is ok for a car of its price.
Its easy to drive, has good visibility and is a comfortable place to be.
Seating & boot space is adequate for most needs too.

Its a jack of all trades really.
But for modest needs I cant think of anything better.

Wont that have a risk of the usual problems that *some* VAG 1.4's have at higher mileages drinking oil etc

Could have. Depends on how it was looked after an if the oil seals were done. Actually, OP, when you take for it a spin, and you come back take off the oil filler cap, and see if there much smoke/steam coming of there. Check the dip stick for oil and check that there is no gunk on either the end of the dip stick of the underside of the filler car. There's a pipe on the left hand side of the engine, that connects into the airbox. If you know your stuff about mechanics, pull this off and take a look into it. It's more than likely covered in gunk. If the engine sounds very rough, or "tappety", well it's the case of the tappets are worn, and maybe need to be replaced. The reason the 1.4 in these Golf drink oil is due to the vavle oil seals, this and the tappets can be a very costly proceedure to fix, so be wary of this if you are buying. Check the gearbox is all good and well, make sure it goes fairly smoothly into all the gears etc. Make sure the engine isn't leaking oil either, and if the underside of the engine looks suspiciously clean, it may be a cause for concern. Drive the car for a bit, and then stop and check that there is no signs of leaking oil. Make sure the engine isn't perfectly warmed up by the time you arrive, you want to start it from cold, and drive it up to warm, and then start it from warm and make sure everything is ok.

That advice could be useful to me, might be looking at a 1.4 Golf soon. Prefer a 106 or tdi but I may be able to get a 1.4 at a great price
