How would I go about this, i'm 19 years old and have experience in previous jobs.

I'm on my summer holiday from next week;)

and yeah i know there is a recession but sure my uncle moved to iceland for a job a while back and they're even worse off than here, as well a friend of mine got a job in Barcelona and they have 20% unemployment, double the figure for Ireland.

    Experience....

I know some (possibly not all) of the TK Maxx's have recruitment freezes on for the next six months.

I'd say your best bet is to ask for 2 weeks work experience, wow them and tell them you are available for the summer.

Most places are on recruitment freeze but f you carve a niche for yourself you might be lucky. Be prepared to say you are totally flexible, ie Friday and Saturday nights!!

I was working in Dunnes over Christmas on a Christmas contract as where 6 other people & none of us were kept on so to be honest I'd say if there was any vacencies they would prob call back some of those people rather than take on new people. Course maybe those people mightnt want their jobs back or were really crap at their job and thats why they wernt kept on:p
Or it could be different where you live:)
TK Max also had people on Christmas contracts

According to my mate (who works in Dunnes and his Bro is one of the main lads in Dunnes) they won't be employing new people. According to my mate who works in TK Maxx in the Green they should be looking for summer people soon enough.

Just hand out your CV's everywhere and anywhere, that's my plan when the leaving finishes.

Why does it have to be Dunnes or Tk Maxx? Why not Pennys, JD Sports, Topman, etc...?

Dunnes are still hiring staff, but not managers.

cheers, does your mate have any ideas on how best to get the attention of management. would they mind if i ask for the manager? it seems pretty busy there so it might put them off.

I'll ask him later on and tell ye.

You never asked my question why are you limiting yourself to Dunnes and TK Maxx?

My Dunnes (Stephens Green) recently did hire people. It doesn't need any now, (unless grocery do) but turnover is high and it probably will be hiring a few in June or something. The people are great and the company itself is eh not. Don't expect a 12 hour week, the contract is 15 for part-time and everyone does 24 hours plus. Starting pay went down recently, it's now €9.13. Everyody leaves their CV's into the customer service desk, that's how me and most people I know there got the job..

Are you limiting yourself to these because they're recession-proof (ish)? Also if you're going for a Dunnes in town, Stephens Green and Henry Street are the only safe bets, the drapery Ilac one is closing down this year. Only the flagships are recession proof! Yeah I'd suggest Penneys too.
