Laptop Display and Boot Problem

Would anyone like to lend a hand?

My Dell Inspiron laptop is having these problems:

    - can't boot normally, only into safe mode.

    - screen has vertical different coloured lines on it, even during BIOS boot phase. Sometimes weird different coloured characters appear on the screen, again in vertical lines, totally obscuring the screen.

    - norton system scan returned no problems.

It has been suggested that the graphics card is busto and might be fixed with
    (1) a driver update, or
    (2) a replacement card (if possible)

Before I go opening up the machine, can this problem be anything else?

    Thanks.

Definatly sounds like a Graphics problem, but I'm no expert so don't take that as fact.

But generally with failing graphcs strange artifacts appear etc.
Also I know if a PC power supply is failing similar things can happen. Did you try it plugged to the mains without the battery?

Sounds like the graphics, but in laptops these can't really be updated (the card) just replaced I think. Try a driver update, Dell will probably have it on the site if not try whoever the maker is.

download HWmonitor program, it measures the graphics card tempeture, either the grahics card is dying,or its severly overheating, are you sure the fan is still working, post model no ,eg dell 520x ,can you hear the fan come on.temp shoud be,50-70 degrees max.
