I suppose this is the eternal question....

Recommend a cheap low maintenance and reliable car.

Was looking at 2003 Toyota Corolla with 51,000 Miles?

Hard to argue with that with a FSH.

+1 Good starting point. and end point :D

Yeah has FSH, only one previous owner €5,350, have 01 Laguna as trade-in (100,000 miles) would get €1,850 for it... not great trade in, but could try and get 6 month warranty.

Any other questions I should be askin? Timing belt? new tyres?

Will go through NCT this month, so wont have to do NCT until 04/11.

Is a site like motorcheck.ie worth the money?

Corolla 1.4 vvti has a timing chain so nothing to worry about there. Check the condition of the tyres yourself, don't presume the garage will. Also get the garage to put the car through the NCT prior to buying it.

Since the car has a FSH ring the garages that serviced the car and verify that the milage coralates with the service intervals.

...and for the future don't confuse "low maintenance" with no maintenence

For thr above criteria your on the right track ... the Corolla will prove to be far more reliable that a laguna .

Was the block replaced? Some of the 1.4vvti engines had their block replaced due to excessive oil consumption.

That's not the worst trade in price for a laguna, you're lucky they're even giving you a price.

Well if they wanna sell cars their gonna have to. Not many people will do without trade-in. To be honest the garages are in such a bad state at the mo...

Buyers have the upper hand at the moment...

But taking a trade-in they know they most likely cannot sell on will make their financial position stronger? Any turnover they make on the Corolla would probably be lost on the Laguna.

Of coures they'll sell it, wont make much margin on any car nowadays... So they have a big problem then, if they dont take trade-ins they wont sell cars !!

They had it good for a long time, now times are bad, comes around in circles for everyone...

With all due respect low mileage Lagunas are difficult enough to sell, one with 100k miles will be very undesireable to the motoring public, they would have to service it, valete it and give some sort of warranty with it.

If they do take it they will most likely offer you trade price for it as they will try and shift it through the trade to a smaller independant dealer.

With respect thats their tough, not my problem... As you said your very surprised that their are taking it as a trade-in but obvioulsy times are hard so they dont have a choice...

buyers market, they had better times over the past number of years, they'll have better times in the future.... I'll take full advantage...

I think you're missing the point. The garage has what you want ( said Toyota ) and they really dont want what you have....

Its the garages tough luck if they cant sell what they have already but there is no onus on any garage to take a sh**e trade in no matter what trading conditions are like.

Its your tough with an attitude like yours though :D

My god gettin your a little agitated.

Just looking for a good deal, lookin after number one here... bein shafted by garages in the past so have little sympathy for them...

    as regards your statement:

I think you're missing the point. The garage has what you want ( said Toyota ) and they really dont want what you have....

Not much of a point as their are plenty of garages with this car and I will wait until I get the best deal for me.... Im in no rush.

Obviously they are a business so he wouldnt have offered the trade-in if it did not make any business sense, so relax a little...

As I've said here before if you want a good deal then be nice. Adjust the attitude a little and stop with the big man I'll show them what a deal is style. Dont think for a minute salesmen dont see this. They do and you end up like you said getting shafted.

    1) Like it or not you dont know what you're doing compared to a salesman.

    2) Try that attitude when you're on the pull and see where that gets you.

    3) You obviously dont knowwhat you are talking about our you'd know that €1800 for an 01 laguna is super money.

If you want it cheaper then its simple, be very very very very nice ;)

Typical Irish attitude, now wonder things are the way they are.

If they dont like I'll walk with my feet, as I said Im in no rush, I'll wait until I get a deal that suits me....

As in every deal it is two way, they can tell me to get lost just like I can, but I think buyers are in a better position.....

You seem to be assuming Im going into garages and shoutin my mouth off. I just say what I want and if they dont have it, bye bye...

Anyway, he already offered it, so whats your point !!
It seems as if your just argueing for arguements sake here...
