Spotted this in a new estate here in Drogheda.
I was working at a house a few doors up.

The lady i was working for told me that the guy who turned up to install the neighbours dish told them that the dish could only be located at that spot as it was the only place he could get a signal.
    What a lazy b******.

Visually,it actually looks much better there than higher up, I think.

The person who owned the house is as responsible for the fact that they left the installer put the dish there, although I do admit it is a tidy install, Id be more worried about some drunken git pulling the dish off or breaking it in spite which I have come across regulary...but another thing that comes to my mind is when the gas box door is opened will it hit off the dish????

It could be painted to match the wall.

A dish ANYWHERE on the front elevation of the house is in breach of planning controls and runs the risk of enforcement from the local council.
I received a letter (as did all local installers) last year from Cork City Council pointing this out and advising that they are actively enforcing this regulation.

My customer opted for a nice tidy T+K bracket on the rear of the house.
While i 'd say it is a neat install, knowing the area that this estate is in i cant honestly see this dish remaining in place for much longer. lol

Can you paint a dish without affecting the signal ?

Yes, any non-metallic paint is fine.
Matt is best, a gloss can be too shiny and reflect too much sunlight onto the LNB, overheating it and possibly melting it (yes even in Ireland).

I believe some masonry paint are corrosive to metal too.
So best to use a matt, non metallic car paint. (primer?)

Yep that needs Planning. Prepare to see it disappear in a few months. ;)

Councils differ in how rigorously they enforce such rules.

But in any case are such restrictions compatable with EU law

You can also paint the LNB (just a very thin coat on the face, mind) and painting the cable is GOOD because paint gives protection from UV and rain.

if it was installed by a sky enginneer then they'll be sacked for it. the health and safety statement we go by says 3metres.

I actually agree - it does actually look quite neat. Ground level would look even neater. But it's just too easy for someone to nick the LNB - or in fact the whole dish in the middle of the night...

From a health and safety perspective it's in a flower border - so it's not like anyone is going to brain themselves walking past - kids though might try swinging on it and hurt themselves in the fall !

There are loads of front mounted dishes all over west / north dublin. And dishes much bigger than 1 meter - which also require planning.

I was out for a walk with the kids and I saw a house with 4 dishes on the front of it with cables trailing all over the place - I mean hanging down with no cable clips to keep them in place. What is the reason for this? Why couldn't they just get a motorised dish or at least one dish with multiple lnbs. If you saw this place (in Celbridge in a fairly respectable housing estate, i.e. detached houses, newish cars, kids all called Caoimhe, Fiachra, Saoirse etc ;)), then you'd wonder why the neighbours didn't report them to the Council for the eyesore they created.

Heh.. when I got SkyHD installed, the installer mounted the dish on the chimney at the back of the house.. about 1.5m off the ground, the LNB is at chest-height, but the installation is neat, and its where I wanted the dish as it gives me easy access should I want to take another feed (or two) from the Quad LNB to drive a second box.. or DIY-ing a second LNB on there for picking up Hotbird

On a Sky std 60cm dish???

    Good luck with that.
