Dunnes have gotten in on the 'meal deal' specials recently devised by M&S and Tesco.

Was in there this morning and picked up a small chicken, mashed potatoes, profiteroles and a bottle of wine.

The options were (in my local store anyways):

    Mains:
    • Meatballs
    • Small Chicken
    • Salmon Darne
    Side:
    • Mashed Potatoes
    • Swede
    Dessert:
    • Tiramisu
    • Profiteroles
    Wine:
    • Douglas Green - White
    • Douglas Green - Red

The chicken was a nice size and was very tasty... probably could stretch out to feed 3 people. The mashed potatoes from Dunnes were absolutely lovely.. never have them before and cooked them in the oven (as opposed to microwave which was recommended) but they'd black pepper running through it that was lovely. Haven't had the wine or profiteroles yet though.

Yeah they're all at it now.

Dunness are also doing some "Actimel" style probiotic deal that works out at 14 cent per bottle.

I was deeply disappointed by the size of the profiteroles. Tesco - big tub of them. Dunnes - 1 or two per person.

I do however applaud the effort.

Any reviews of the vino yet?
    The red, specifically.

Yeah i had the red on Friday, Douglas Green cab sav shiraz. It was beautiful, really nice wine. Had the meatballs with tomato and herb sauce too, not the best. But i'm happy with dinner and a nice wine for a tenner!

    The BBQ meatballs are fab.

The quality of the food is excellent overall and great value for €10. I must say I didn't like the red wine at all, though.

Saw this advertised outside Dunnes clondalkin. Went in and couldn't find the offer. At least m&s have it very openly laid out.

Saw them today (in ILAC Centre) and thought the sauce looked a bit gloopy and unappetising. Maybe it's better when cooked? :o Thought they also had a bag of prepared veg as part of the offer? Looks interesting for a tenner though.

Its hard to complain for a tennor. That said I tried the meatballs - not great to be honest and the profiteroles were abit of a joke.

    I'd rather pay 2.50 extra and wait for M & S anyday

Maybe my standards are a bit low, lads, but I thought the BBQ sauce was delicious.

I have another helping in the fridge for tonight :D.

Chicken was nice, veg was a good size(bigger than M&S) but the profiteroles weren't nice. Haven't tried the wine yet. Good deal in my opinion.

A man needs his fortnightly profiterole stack:D

Got this Dunnes offer before and in fairness it's not bad for a tenner. But seeing as Marks and Sparks should have their Dine for 2 on this weekend I think I'll hold off for that.
The staff are always much friendlier in M&S too, I love they way they seem to have a policy of employing people in their senior years, unlike Dunnes or Tesco.

Tesco wins the profiterole title :) - theres way more than needed for 2 people

A very very lazy effort in my opinion.

people want a nice prepared meal in not just a chicken and some mash,

    side dishes disgusting.

salmon, how is that a main you dont just serve salmon like that. Spent another 10 euro and 40 mins in kitchen making salmon en crut.

Would much rather go for prepared meal like fish pie tesco are doing in their meal deals.

deserts dreadful again and no value. They were selling for 1.79 to buy on their own which shows the class difference versus 3.50 standard for tesco or 6.50 profiteroles.

took water over their cheap wine.

    Woud not ever get again.

M&s and tesco in a total different class.

This was like a big F you, we are cheaper we will give you crap

Since there seems to be a bit of a profiterole fetish among some in this forum on boards.ie :D those of you in Dublin should check out Party Cake a Polish bakery on Capel Street where they sell mini-eclairs (basically profiteroles filled with a slightly sweetened (I think!) cream) either plain or with chocolate for about €11 a Kg. Very roughly they work out at about €0.10 each I reckon and are the business either on their own or with ice cream and more chocolate sauce etc...
