I heard a while ago that u can get bikes out of garda stations if they've been there for a good while without collection. Just wondering how this works, any costs involved, is it true and how to go about getting one? Certainly save a few bob. Cheers!

Kevin Street Garda station used to do an auction every couple of months with anything thas was not collected by its owner after 6 months.

Not sure what way it works now.

I would not bother waiting for the next of the auctions which jonny24ie mentions

many of the bikes are in poor repair and there is high demand for the good ones so you wont get a bargain nice bike

i'd look in the buy and sell or ask around workmates if i were you

There is no or has there ever been any system for "free bikes off the gardai"

what did used to happen in places like Kevin St. and Store St. is that the garda taking the report of a stolen bike would encourage you with a wink to be quite vague about the description and take you out back and ask you if any of the impounded bikes were yours. Doubt it happens these days though.

As for the auction - it's been subcontracted to Merlin and the reports from the last one were pretty crap
