Please explain - Widows and Orphans tax/fund/pension

Hi there, Im a public sector worker and i will admit that i have not a clue of what the whole "widows and orphans" fund is that i am paying into each month. Can anyone explain it? Also how do i find out how much i should be paying (if i should be paying). Thanks P.S Please dont think that i am ranting about having to pay…
