Hi i will be visiting carlow town soon at the weekend a will be taking herself to dinner that night. Now I want to take her to a nice place that will look after us and not just shove us in a corner and i want it to be special.

I have read the other thread and ye all seem to recomend a chineese but i would rather a nice cosy country style restaurant that will serve a nice steak and so if you catch my drift.

    all help is appreciated.

Cost isnt a huge factor but within reason please.

    Thank You in advance

nice expensive steaks you can go to Grill and Grape...think they;re under new management AGAIN!
Lotus chinese does nice steaks. ;)

Oh i'd recommened ye to go to Mimosa(?) tapas bar after food. It's opposite the cathedral. It's really nice, quiet enough place to have a nice chat and enjoy some drinks and snacks!very romantic.

I reckon Lautrecs on Tullow St is your best bet. Its just beside Med Bar.

Does amazing variation of food, in my opinion best in town.

Here is a link to the dinner menu

    Hi,

Mimosa on Cathedral Place. Service great, food great, ambiance really good. Price reasonable, wine list extensive. We had a brilliant time.

The Lemon Grass food is always good and never had an issue with service.

Personally NOT HAPPY with the golden grill - a steak house down by the river. Bad Service, too long waiting on food - very under cooked sea food, - NOT HAPPY - We have been there a few times and it has just really gone down hill :-(

Lautrecs - when we went upstairs was way too hot and really uncomfortable - but downstairs is lovely.

I really hope you enjoy yourself where ever you go.

I'm sure you mean the Grill & Grape.... i doubt the Golden Grill chipper on Dublin St would be the kinda place to impress a girl! ;)

But Lautrecs as i said earlier i liked, but ive always only eaten downstairs.

Lemon Grass is a decent option too.

Never even heard of that Mimosa place, must give it a try soon.

Hopefully the OP will report back on where he went and let us know what he & herself thought of it.

    :D

Funny, only when I read your response - God imagine taking any girl on a first date to the golden grill !!!

Yes, I meant the Grill and Grape - and it's a pity because the first two times we went it was great, presentation, service, food, everything - and then I don't know what happened, it's like they just stopped trying or something.

Mount Wolsey restaurant does do lovely food.

I don't know if it is too far out - but in Clonegal - Sha-Roe is fantastic - has to be booked well in advance though - but is worth is - a little pricey - but for special occasions we thought it was great.

I hope he enjoys it and keeps us updated.

little venice is nice - under new management now - never there when the other people had it. The menu isnt extensive thats the only thing. good service fresh food and not that expensive

Aye, the golden grill would be your best bet alright. The perfect place to bring a lass on a date. ;):D

All joking aside, The Jasmine would be my preferred choice, especially if Chinese food takes your fancy. But if your into country restaurants, I personally love the Lord Bagnel in Bagnelstown. Its about 5 miles outside Carlow town on the Kilkenny road, but they serve up some great grub. I'm rarely disappointed anyways!

All your help has been very helpful hoping to head up next weekend when all my study is done for my college exams.

Il let you know what I think of the resteraunt,

Here is a poll I made up to see what other people think and hopefully will help others visiting the town and so on.

    Thanks again ye are great,

I clicked on Mimosa but then I thought...That's not really a "Dinner" place. Its more of a Wine Bar with DELICIOUS snacks. For dinner and great steak I think I'd go to the restaurant in the Seven Oaks. Infact, I'm gonna bring my girlfriend there this evening! I just decided that right this minute.

was in the lord bagnal today and was easily disappointed, the place was not overly busy but it is still a nightmare trying to negotiate your way around the many pokey rooms in it and i also thought the €12.50 carvery was overpriced for very mediocre fare which was servrd warm and the carrots while cooked nicely were cold and the whole lot presented huddled in a pile on a plate that was too small for the meagre servings given!

Ill second that, sha-roe, beautiful cozy little country restaurant but possibly too far out of town if you want to have a drink.

Weeping thaiger is also really nice....

Meagre servings in the bagenal? That's a first, usually the place gives massive dsihes piled with stuff!

EDIT: Lautrec's is always a good bet.

Was in the Grill & Grape the other day. Dessert had mould on it - manager's excuse "Sure it was only made the other day" - and the service definitely has not improved under this alleged new management.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 605 ✭✭✭foundry

I agree grill and grape is not good. but there offer looks good, full dinner for 2 n wine i think for 50 euro..

I was there one busy sat nite. We were there 3 hours, not by choice mind u. Service was soooooooo slow. I kno they were busy but it was an hour waitin on each course.
    Never again.

Lemongrass got my vote! Go during the day b4 5 if possible.
Bento lunch for 16€. Yum yum............. chicken satay skewers.... mmm... :P

    I'm torn on the poll. can't I choose 2

I like both the Lemon Grass and I've twice been to Mount Wolsely Fredrics and found it to be great food.
Also I love the Weeping Thai, Lotus, Pearls . umm I do like my food but maybe a little too much.

    Damn I'm hungry now..:(

Problem with Lautrecs is that you are "on view" in the windows, unless you specifically request NOT to be seated there. I love the Thaiger, had a few bad experiences in Lemon Grass -e.g once we were given a table under the stairs, could hardly talk with people tramping up and down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 910 ✭✭✭tombull82

    I love the Thaiger, .

I have to say the best dish by far has to be the Weeping Thaiger dish itself. But the duck curry is quite also.
