    Hey everyone,

A bit of background on me, I am recently at a loose end (unemployed) and am toying with the idea of heading to thailand to see some of the country, have a break and to participate in a fight.

I have little or no fighting experience but I would like to do this and am in ok physical shape but not conditioned in terms of fighting. I am looking to do this and set a date to help me focus on doing it and doing as well as I can,

Has anybody on here done this? If so any advice or suggestions?

I have looked at this and it seems good but any help greatly appreciated,

    Thanks guys,

I have little experience with thai boxing but am very familiar with the island of koh tao having spent 6 months there a few years back.

I did go to a muay thai fight on the island but there was only one in the time I was there. The island is tourist oriented and based largely around the scuba diving community.

IF you look hard enough and know the right people you can get very cheap accomodation, I had a room for about 30 euro a month, however this had electricity only at night and you had to wash by throwing cold water over yourself with water.

If your intention is to really train muay thai I would imagine there are better gyms out there with less distractions.

If you're really going to learn to fight (and that is to be your main focus) then Bangkok has some very good Thai gyms.

If it's a mix of training and pleasure you're after, I'd suggest Samui. There are two WMC camps (one at each of the two main beaches) there and Pinyo's (on the road between the two). All 3 camps come recommended.

In terms of fighting, you should have a look at fights from lumpini, rajadamnern or the channel 7 stadium (all in bangkok) before you even consider heading over, so you understand what you're getting yourself into. :) (the standard will be lower wherever you fight, but it's worth looking at the high end of the skill spectrum) Your gym will arrange a fight for you. You should be careful though....the Thais will just feck you in the ring and it's full rules all the way there.

Northern Thailand is also worth considering. It's harder to find a really good camp, but easier to find a non-farang (foreigner) camp. Northern Thailand is more relaxed and a HELL of a lot cheaper. You're also more likely to get a non-bollox fight. By that I mean that fights on the islands (especially the smaller ones) can be just a show for the tourists. Fights I saw in Northern Thailand were all in a field in the arse-end of nowhere and purely for the benefit of Thai people.

I would suggest getting fit before going over. Training there is hard (or else you're in a sh*t camp). Also, without any Muay Thai skills, you're reasonably likely to be ignored / discounted, so it would be worthwhile getting some classes in here before you go.

edit: Great aspiration though. I hope you pull it off.

Khannie, how much roughly do the camps cost to train in down in samui??
    Cheers!

Pinyo's was 1500 baht (30 quid) per week as far as I remember. That got you training twice a day. You could probably negotiate a monthly price with them though.

God damnit I want to go and live in Thailand.

Hey OP, If you're going to learn to fight I would give the Islands a wide berth. They are tourist orientated and have no decent trainers worth speaking of. I've seen coaches arriving drunk and taking guys on pads.
You have only 2 real choices, Bangkok; expensive by comparison to the rest of thailand but they'll have the best trainers and a good stable of fighters for you to spar with, or up north; cheaper but obviously the quality will dip a little. There are some good places up north, specifically Chiang mai, Pai and Udon ratchatani.
There's still plenty of social activities in Chiang mai if your holidaying also. How long are you going for? How much is your budget? How serious are you about your training? Answer these and I can give you much better advice.
