re-map/tuning module differences?

    Hello
I drive a mercedes sprinter 211 cdi (110bhp) van it drives great but I would like it to have more pick up throught the gears,
I have always been sceptical of resistor type tuning devices that dump lots of fuel in,do they harm the ecu?

My knowledge of ecu tuning is limited,I would imagine to do it properly it needs to be reprogramed or a new chip in the ecu, so im looking for information from people who have first hand experience with a remap or a tuning module and could advise me on what would work best for my type of engine, and the long term reliability of the ecu itself not so much the engine as in my opinion is how it is treated after,
Also i was considering putting a ecu from the next model up 213 or 313 rated at 130bhp, may have to re program the key, not sure? as it is the same engine/turbo but with different map,

Any information would be greatly apprected

    Thank you in advance

Remapping can be tailored to the vehicle, unlike the plug and play Tuning Boxes. Bear in mind that it'll put more pressure on your clutch.

Steer clear of the cheap ebay tuning boxes, all they are is a resistor in a resin filled box that fools the ecu into thinking it's colder and therefor dumps more fuel as you stated.

There are more up to date plug in tuning modules available, can be plugged in and out as needed but would not be as good as a propper remap.

Remapping is usually done through the obd (diagnostic) port on modern cars/vans, the original map is removed and stored and an updated and enhanced map is loaded on. Timing, fueling, turbo boos along with a host of other settings are adjusted to make more power and torque.

You would be best off with a custom remap as it will give the best gains. Talk to Joe from chippedire, he is a legend with diesels :)

I got a tuning box a few years ago for my Bora TDi from http://www.westwardeng.com/ . They come highly recommended.

    Thank you for the replies,
For peace of mind and for the best set up i will probably go with a custom map, do you think it needs to be done on the rolling road?
As for the extra torque im looking into sourcing a solid flywheel kit as there is some play in the dual mass one on it now,I will contact chippedire have you used them?
I had planned to go to martin tracey will check them both out,

    Thanks again
    regards,
