I got my first laptop two weeks ago. It's a Dell Studio 1537 : Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8600(2.40GHz,1066MHz,3MB). I notice it's really hot on & around and to the left of the touchpad. Is that normal? I'd only be surfing or working on Open Office apps. It heats up within a few minutes of switching on.

Is that a mobile procesor, could not be and so the result is too much heat for the cooling system.

It's pretty normal for a laptop to run warm, especially one with decent power and especially a good GPU. But 'hot' would not be normal.

Is the fan running? You should be able to hear/feel it.

Make sure you are not blocking the in/out vents. Also make sure you're not using it on a dusty surfrace (eg bed, dirty desk etc), as it will just suck in tonnes of crap and block the vents. If possible you should clean the vents and fan periodically.

Download HWMonitor and report back what the max temps are like.

That's no the processor in that area. IIRC, that's be around the LAN-card, HDD area, which on my laptop also gets pretty bloody hot. It's no problem
