Intermittent Wiper Problem

Has anyone come across this before, I have a 2000 Nissan Primera and the intermittent wipers are acting up.

What happens is that when the wipers are set on an intermittent speed from the down position,
they will go half up the windscreen and stop for a few seconds,
then they go to the top of the windscreen and stop for a moment
then back down half way and stop,
then all the way back down.

The timing of the wipers seem correct but they just don't go all way up and down in one go. The normal wiper speeds are fine, but if I use the washer the wipers do not always return to the starting position.

I think the wipers are controlled by a relay could this be the problem, I looked at the wiring diagrams before for the wipers and saw that sperate circuits are used for the normal and intermittent settings.

This is a commen problem with the 02 shape puntos (used to work in a fiat dealers). its the wiper motor was at fault in them. your best bet is go to a breakers yard and get a new motor and relay, shouldn't be to expensive. i know a quick fix on the puntos, involved opening the motor and cleaning the contacts on the electrical switches of grease, wouldn't be sure if the nissan one is the same though.

The problem is with the motor and is a common primera problem. If you buy 2nd hand there is no guarantee it wont also develope this fault but it can be fixed.

If you are up for a bit of DIY log onto www.nissanprimera .net and go into the forums and select "nissan primera knowledge base" forum. Bottom of the page is a tread with details of how to fix the problem including pictures. This is the link.

You may have to register to see it but that's free!

On my 3rd primera and find this site handy.

i've done that fix and it does work the hardest bit is drilling out the rivets and getting some self tappers tò hold it together (did mine about a year ago after getting new wiper moters from scrappies that worked for a while and then developed the same problem) if your for some diy its worth a go, I did have a spare motor in the car though so it took the pressure off.

Thanks for the info and site link the last time I used a primeras owners site you had to pay to register, I do have the service shop manual if anyone is interested.

I'm up for some DIY, and will look at getting a new motor, seems to be in an awkward place to get to.
