    Hi ppl,
I have an innovative idea for a online gaming/poker related product. Is there anyone here who could give me some advice on the best place to go with the idea in terms of getting it developed or more importantly at first getting the idea protected?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated,
    tnx

    tnx ollie, but

i did think about going down that line and actually have made contact with one of them and am awaiting a reply. however i'm thinking that may not be the way to go. they don't seem to have any IT/software development let alone any connections to the gaming industry that i can see but i am awaiting a reply. however i'm still looking for all options

Maybe approach Full Tilt or the like and they might be willing to supply some seedcorn funding. They have a big office in Dublin. I've no idea if this would work though.

In terms of getting it developed - you might start with applying to your local County Enterprise Board or Enterprise Ireland for a feasibility grant to develop it (choice depends on possible size of business, export potential, number of potential employees etc...) - the feasibility grant would let you do a bit of work on developing the product, seeing if there were a market for it etc....

The good news on that front is that A) there is a lot of interest within State grant giving bodies in funding/supporting certain types of technology related bodies,, the whole 'knowledge economy thing' ; and B) Ireland is now officially interested in backing gaming type companies (new one announced for Cork lately etc etc).

To get it protected - thats a much more complex area, and consequently a bit on the expensive side - you will need a very detailed spec in order to file for a patent, you'll have to decide in how many countries you wish to file for a patent etc... Best bet here (possibly, imo), is to include the costs of getting a full patent/copyright protection in your applications for funding (assuming you'll go partly the State or venture captial route) and deal with it that way.

    Best of luck.

    thnks Lplate,

that something i'm actually doing as of the other day and the initial response from the Enterprise Board was that they 'thought i had alot going for me' with this application and idea.....again let's see.

just as an aside.....how can i find out if the idea i have is not already being developed? i cant find it on any patent search but then again that doen't mean it's not being done or something like it already??

Try the engineering forum, loads of people there can help you I'm sure.
Try www.delphion.com for a quick patent search. It's basic but you may see if it has already been patented.

If you have a real idea go to a patent agent. If your idea is close to completion your local enterprise boards will help you.

Without sayin exactly what your doin, should you get the patent sorted out will you be looking for investors (not of the dragons den proportions) to fund this venture.
    If so how much?
If yad like ta pm me on this feel free as i`d be interested in hearing yur plans as i may be interested in investing in something like this if ya so wished

in answer to your q.......well to build a prototype would be very expensive as we all know software engineers dont quite settle for minimum wage....

and then getting the product tested, then marketed, sold and the ongoing service side of the business up and running.....well i'm afraid your are talking very substantial investment and easily on the scale of the Dragon's Den i'd imagine.....
