Generally this series is repeated at the weekends on RTÉ ONE or UTV.

It is actually quite an interesting TV Detective show.

Peter Falk plays Lt. Columbo, a small dectective who's physical appears is used to unhinge the Murders in each episodes.

The episode are generally 2hours in duration and in the first 10 to 20 minutes the Murderer and the Victim are shown in their everyday lives, by the end of these 10 to 20 minutes the victim has been killed and the murderer sets about setting up the murder as the perfect crime.

Lt. Columbo only appears at this stage of the show, he will introduce himself to the murderers, while the camera looks around the murder scene at different aspects that Columbo might have notice, this gives the audience a sense of what the Murderer has done wrong.

Generally speaking Columbo will investigate more upper class murders, the rich of LA who decide the victims will leaves them with money or they are just tired of their relationship with their husband/wife.

The show doesn't follow Columbo or the police rather if follows the lies that the Murderer (and accomplice) tell Columbo. How Columbo uses his strange questions to get to them, how he is always there waiting to ask them the next question and how they try to come up with answers, and how they become infuriated with his tactics.

Often their are few characters, Columbo, The Murderer, the murderers relatives or friends. Columbo speaks to them about his life about the wife and his superiors, but the audience rarely enters the police station or gets to meet any of Columbo's colleagues. The stories revolve around the Murder and the Murderers.

Columbo isn't a "Whodunit" as the audience know from the beginning who the murderer is, rather we want to know how Columbo catches the murderer.

I happened to catch the first episode today on UTV called Prescription Murder. It suffered from the usual TV acting from the 1960s many of the actors play their characters straight up but Peter Falk was able to bring his character to another level, with his bad style, his bad eye and his seeming incompetent way about doing his job.

What is also noteworthy about this series is that it starred many big star names and was written on occasion by Steven Bochco writter of "Hill Street Blues", "L.A. Law" and "NYPD Blue".

I had noticed it before, but I got to thinking about it again during the week and I saw it this morning on UTV.

I think this could be Week 25 for TV Show of the Week!

    Great show,a classic.
Was watching a biography of Peter Falk on tv a few weeks back and I was startled to hear that he was paid $500,000 an episode in the 70's .
Highest paid tv star at that time.

Actually, I've also been watching it the last few weeks and thoroughly enjoying it.:)

Next thing back will be Quincy :P. Used to love that too.

I always loved Columbo...modern day Sherlock Holmes. His acting and character was first class, Peter Falk is a very underrated actor. He has put in some very fine film performances over the years, he's done alot of independent and tv movie work that have garnered him alot of respect.

columbo is a legend. I remember watching him when i was a child. I downloaded the episode with johnny cash in it. Funny out.
When peter falk was a child he played baseball and one day the ref or whatever ya call him called a foul against him. Peter falk took out his fake eye(obviously)and handed it to the ref and told him even his fake eye seen he didnt foul the ball.
    Read that on wicki.

Great show! Loving the repeats on RTE at the moment. Nothing better than sitting down on a rainy Sunday afternoon to watch it. Today's cop shows aren't in the same league. All jerky cameras that make you dizzy by the end of the show!mad.gif

I read somewhere that Peter Falk wanted to do one more episode to finish it off a few years ago but none of the TV companies where interested unfortunately.

Sad to hear about his illness also.

If you like Columbo then you should like this.

    He enters at 7.03

    part 2

The first few seasosns in the 70's were genius - any of the episodes that had Jack Cassidy, Robert Cult or Patrick McGoohan as the villain were THE stand out episodes IMO. The shows from the 80's and 90's sucked though.

It was actually good for your health to have acted in Columbo - most of the bigger name stars are still alive - culp, falk, shatner etc. Patrick Mc Goohan only died last month. Main exception to this rule would be Jack Cassidy who died in a very grisly fire in 1976 (he was the father of David Cassidy BTW - the super teen idol from the 70's).

The later series did not have any "star names" as villains unlike the earlier version.
