I want to upgrade my FTA receiver from the present Lidle setup.
I dont really know what features I can expect to get these days. I dont ever record shows from the TV so HD is not an issue. I only recently realised that you can view films from my USB stick on my DVD player, can you do that through a Sat box too? I would like a better EPG than I have at present. I dont require digital. I just pick up the Astra channels ie fixed dish. I am however a gadget freak so if there are box's with cool features I would be interested in hearing about them. Money wise I suppose no more than €200 ish. Thanks.

When you say HD do you mean High def or hard drive?

HD and recording are not the same thing - you dont need one for the other.

Given the amount of repeats and +1 channels, I too didnt see any need for a PVR (personal video recorder). After my lidl box I opted for a Humax Freesat HD box, giving me a great EPG and the benefit of some HD content which is very impressive quality if your TV supports 1080i/p

I got mine on ebay for £99 + postage

There are other freesat and non-freesat boxes out there, but I'm not sure how good the EPG is on non-freesat.

Get a box with Freesat. The only way to have decent EPG.

@waster the configurable linux boxes are for people more into satellite as hobby than watching TV. Most boxes actually run linux.

    Hard Drive = HDD
    High Definition = HD

if you want hd and irish freeview buy a 6990 technomate or just sd buy a 5400 super or a 5200 super which is much cheaper they are both pvr and you can use them as a recorder with a usb stick (8gb. or more which only costs 20euroes and can record for about 3 hours. you can also pause the program and if you want to record more you can use a hdd disc. i am not a sales man for technomate but i find them very good.

Not 100% sure what you want to upgrade to if your not interested in recording or hi def. Like watty says, perhaps a freesat receiver with red button and 7 day epg is what you need.

that was the crux of my dilemma, I wasn't 100% sure myself.
But now I have found out that I can use an external memory device in other box's so happy days. I have had a look at those Technomate 5200/5400's, they seem to be well respected so now I am on to the shopping stage. Thanks lads.
