I have a 05 BMW 116i, that I got in January, not really impressed with it at all, clunky gearbox, bad clutch, non existent suspension. It has 42k miles on it.
Anways Im looking at an 06 honda Civic 1.8 i-VTEC es with 59k miles on it.

The guy had a quick look at mine and said he'd be looking for €1000 euro with mine, just wondering is this a bit much as his has higher mileage and my car seems to hold its value a bit better. And plus I dont actually have 1k at the moment :)

    Cheers for any advice!

I know of a Honda garage who have 3 1.8 models (trade ins) in stock since last year, they're next to impossible to sell on. even with the high spec.

I'd still prefer one to a 116i though.

I have to agree with you op, the 1 series is not a very good car. Got one as a courtesy car several months back and it was horrible on the back roads, even a transit is more comfortable.

A civic is a much more refined car, and if its anything like the stream to drive, it will be quite nippy too.

yeah the 116 is non existent on the speed front, the boot space and the back passenger space, really disappointed with it. Had an 02 316ti compact before it and it was a little rocket, but with sprog on the way had to get something a bit more family friendly.

Like the look of the civic and the overall space inside and in the boot is miles better than the BMW. But after getting the loan out for the 116 I really want to get a different car for as little as possible. 1k is ok I think but with cash being tight at the moment I'd obviously like it a little less!

To be honest €1000 to trade up is not a bad price considering the market. No offence OP but it sounds like you really cannot afford to change your car. If that is the case then maybe you should just put up with the 116i until you have enough funds available to trade up proper.

Regarding buying something that will hold it's value, this is a myth in the current climate, nothing is holding it's value especially a Civic with a 1.8 litre engine on the old motor tax system.

Jesus the 116 must be horrendously slow.

EDIT. Actually, just checked on Parkers and the specs (0-60, top speed and bhp) are the same for both cars, maybe the newer (presumably safer etc) car just feels slower?

Did you not drive it or check out things like boot space before buying?

+1. They were easy to shift in the boom as everyone wanted one for the badge but you couldn't shift one now if you put cash in the glovebox with it. To be honest, I'd take in 1K hit and get rid of it while it will only cost you 1K.

    Wasn't the 02 316ti a 1.8 litre though?

Same as some 318's are 2 Litres!

320 is a 6 cylinder or something and the 318 is 4 cylander!

I know nothing about BMW's but thats just what I've picked up off boards!

The 320i up until the E90 was 6 cylinder. Then BMW decided to remove two cylinders and now its not a proper BMW! :D

OP, the Civic's suspension is quite hard as well. They managed to get all that great legroom in the back by using a not-very-sophisticated suspension system at the rear and by flattening the petrol tank so that its under the floor.

That said I've no problems with mine - 5-door 1.8 i-vtec. Its quick enough and loves to be revved. Most of the 1.8's come with a good bit of kit as standard. ES models have glass roof, dual zone climate control, cruise control, 16" alloys, front fogs, etc. EX ones get leather interior but are missing some of the toys (fogs, glass roof, etc) from the ES models. Most of the 1.4's are paddy poverty spec, right down to the blanked out front fogs and steel wheels with crappy plastic hub caps!

If I was buying again though I'd get the 2.2 diesel. Its in the tax/co2 sweet spot and has the same power output as the 1.8 petrol but much more torque, along with great economy. They didn't start selling them here till 2008 though.
