Problem with grant application - proof of address

From October to February I was living in a house with a number of people. Everybody used to give one person the rent monthly and they would put all the money into the landladys account.

I never met the landlady and she was unaware that the tenants in the house had changed as everyone that was living in the house with me had moved into the house through word of mouth when a room became free and the landlady never came to the house.

As part of the grant application I have to get a letter from previous landlards for a certain period and the time I was living in this house falls into the period.

As the landlady was not aware I was living in the house up until 2 weeks before I moved out and she had other people registered with the tenents board she has said she will not sign anything that says I was living in her house. She is under the impression that she could be liable for a fine of 3,000 for each person she did not have registered. This could be true. She could say she was not aware but then again she made no effort to find out so is she liable for the fine?

I had no official statements coming to that address.

So the grant application asks for proof of address and the landlady will not give me a letter saying I was there.

    What is the next step?

You could write a letter detailing where you resided at the time and ask a peace commissioner to sign it after you give an affidavit that is where you lived. There is a small fee

or phone the local authority and ask them (without giving your details), I'm sure they came across a situation like yours before.

A letter signed by a commisioner of the oaths will work.

Ask for the contact details of one in the Garda stations nearest you.
