Too much oil in car!

Someone topped up my oil last weekend and I just thought I'd check it today as it seems to be burning quite a bit this last while. So now I'm only noticing it's about an inch over the mark on the dipstick. Am I in trouble:(

Is there a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust when driving? Thats usually a good indication of too much oil in a car.

If there is too much then you can drain some by removing the oil sump plug at the bottom of the sump, a mechanic would do this in 2 minutes.

Too much oil is as bad as too little. Have a mechanic look at it immediately.

    agreed d.r adams

and get it done sooner rather than later, before it does damage that will cost a small fortune,

better having it slightly below the full mark on the dipstick ,than slightly higher,

its not a corsa by any chance, they have a habit of burning oil,

and it might not be a bad idea to have the oil changed and a new filter , that would make a small difference to the oil burning situation, as some cars seem to use alot of oil if they havent been regularly serviced

Its tricky enough to get the sump plug back in while there is oil gushing out of it! Very hard to gauge how much to take out aswell so you may have to repeat the process. My recommendation would be just empty it all and put in new oil and filter. Wont break the bank if you know how to do it yourself.

Thanks a million guys for getting back so quickly.
Just really worried now because I've drove it over a hundred miles already!
Suppose I shudn't drive it anywere other than a garage now then so!

Haven't noticed any smoke D.R Adams but suppose I just might not have noticed as I didn't realise to this evening that there was too much in!

Get a long thin plastic tube and suck some out into a jar from the filling hole.
If it's clear plastic you can see the oil coming and wont get any in your mouth.

    Keep checking the dipstick.

it wont kill it ,i often had a lorry with a gallon too much oil in it, because some ejgit taught they were doing the right thing,

100 miles is nothing, but still get someone to let it out for you before you use it again, and it would be alright to drive it to a garage to get this done,

Phew, that's put my mind at ease- (I know nothing about these things)!
Finally got through to my bro so am bringing it over there later to drain some out! It's nearly due a service so will get it into a garage next week! Fingers crossed there's no damage done!
    thanks again guys!

Unless you know what your doing this is not a good idea. The oil would have to be hot to have much of a chance of siphoning it out and if you miss time it you'll have a mouth full of hot oil!! But if you get a cheap siphon pump from a motorfactors or hardward store it would be OK.
