Sending money to New Zealand?

I have posted this here for New Zealand focused knowledge as I suppose a few Irish gone out there would have been the same situation as myself before when the invariable bailout from Mom and Dad to fund the summer gets needed:pac:

    Anyway here goes,

I need to send a small amount of money to NZ which amounts to NZ$330 or roughly €150. The person I am sending it to wants me to pay it into their bank account and do an International Bank Transfer, I went to my BOI bank today and was told told it would cost between €7 and €25 to to do this transaction depending on the NZ Bank charges and I can either absorb the cost myself, share it or make the recipient accept the bank charges. This is a ripoff from the Bank of Ireland and represents a charge of an additional 16.6% of the transaction, if it is the upper end €25 which it almost invariably will. I could live with €7 to €10 but anything more in ludicrous.

My two other options I have come up with the get the money over there is to get a Bank Draft denominated in New Zealand Dollars costing €3.80 from the Bank and post it via registered post to New Zealand costing €5.17 so €8.97 would be the cost of that. I could wire the money with Western Union but this will cost me €20 An Post told me and I am not too sure of it due to all the scams running with Western Union.

I am sending this money to pay for a Digital Terrestrial Receiver "Freeview HD" which I cannot get anywhere else cheaply with suitable specs for the new Irish DTT service bar New Zealand and the seller (Whom I have spoken to and trust) doesn't take Credit Card.

I wonder is there any other way to get payment to him affordably?

    PayPal?

Or, do you know someone (trustworthy) who's travelling over there some soon, and could deposit it for you onshore? (Every single Irish person ever seems to have a relative or friend who's in NZ, been there, or planning on going sometime soon!)

TBH, I would be a bit sus about any NZ vendor who's willing to ship internationally but doesn't take credit cards. More than a bit, in fact.

Amazingly I actually don't know some one in NZ as all my family expats (aunties and uncles) headed to the USA and for some reason NZ or Australia was not popular down here (Kerry) until recently partly due to the higher cost of getting there and having a shoe in state side before them. I know it sounds a bit sus as you say but the people I am dealing with are very reputable and established a good while and have sold to Ireland before so I am not worried there, I would have a greater fear of the Bank of Ireland messing things up tbh. I have spoken to my NZ dealer and I am wiring the money through and hopefully BOI won't go too hard on me:)

I will post back here when I receive my goods from NZ and rate my process of sending money over there for future reference of other users of the forum. It could go in a sticky or something for expats etc.

$330 sounds a massive amount for a freeview box, I paid $100 for one second hand from cash covertors here a few months back and Im sure they were only 200-300 new.

    Have you checked out Trademe?

Its costs NZ$130 to ship to Ireland alone (DHL 7 days) and the box it self is only $199.99. It still works out ok and trying to get one of the right spec is near impossible without paying mega bucks in Ireland so I have to import from NZ.

I actually did check out Trademe but it is only open to Australian and New Zealand residents so no good for me plus they are actually more expensive than where I am sourcing mine. Pity eBay didn't take off down under instead of that trademe crap and open it to the entire globe.

Ah cool glad your not getting ripped off :) I actually think Trademe is far better to use then Ebay because its locked down to those places. Reduces the risk of all the scammers and crap thats on Ebay and makes it very relevant and easy to sell stuff without risk of countless fraudlant bids. Ebay didnt really ever take off down here.

Whatever you do don't send cash.. registered post or not... I lost $300 last month because someone sent me cash in a card.. which I never got. The envelope was cut open, money taken, and selo-taped back up, even though it was registered post. Expensive lesson for the sender. :(

Wire transfer or Paypal is your best bet.

Ahh, yeah, right. I've used both, and Trade-me is the site I miss most now that I'm living in Ireland.

Trade-me is focussed auction site that is easy to use and has only local-ish sellers. E-bay is world-wide site with junk merchants from all over the planet, and (by comparison) a very nasty hard to use interface.

fyi, Trade-me chose not to enter the NZ market 'cos it was too small. Left the way clear for a local guy who started out in his parents garage, and who really understood about making the site easy to use. He's now VERY rich, as are his parents who were early shareholders.

Good advise, same crap over here...every single letter, card, package we got sent over Christmas had been opened...from discreet slits to check for cash to forcefully removing wrapping to check contents - we had to complain because without fail every single item had been opened over a period of a few weeks...
