    Well I do like coffee...

Amen to a coffee filled weekend, been looking forward to it, also looking forward to the bank holiday weekend next week too. Anyone fancy an off-topic thread (this one)?

    good call.

coffee filled weekend sounds good to me. really broke and out of coffee though, thinking 250g of that cuban stuff in m&d for 8 euro. cant think of anywhere else for cheap fresh beans...

The farmer's market in Temple bar if it ain't finish will have ariosa afaik. You should be able to get fixx beans in Buzz's new shop, his old shop on aungier st may stock them too.

That stuff really disappointed me (got some about 2 weeks ago). All flavour was roasted out of it. :( Tasted like charcoal. :(

edit: oh yes, I like the idea of an off topic thread

Haven't had anything particularly pleasant from M&D.

I haven't bought from M&D in well over a year, not since I started roasting myself.
Their Cuban beans were always edging towards a too dark roast.

I'd love to know where they're getting their Cuban greens as I haven't
seen anyone else selling Cuban beans freshly roasted (just the usual
Cubita or Serrano and my days of buying old roasted or ground are long gone).

    Who'd have thought?!

Although she tried, it appears my 17 month old daughter can't balance an espresso cup on her head....

    She just needs more practice.

Don't try to blame your own middle of the night cup balancing failures on the little one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 410 ✭✭Kannon

Went for the Ariosa Kenyan bean Mr. Mag. I found it quite mild but i still like it and would definitely pick it up again. Still haven't got around to picking up a french press so i only tried it espresso styley. They had a Brazilian and an Indian bean too when i went in which i'm going to have to sample.

The little poppet just needs some practise - might I suggest training with some jars of instant. :D

Did anyone wrangle a date from Steve as to when he hopes to have the Behmors in? I've a lot of greens in and the iroast is doing my nut in.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,440 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

    LOL.

He reckoned the Behmors would be hitting the street in 5 weeks.

Oooooh, arrange it soon, for a Saturday afternoon and not a Bank Holiday weekend. Last two meets I had to put my children ahead of my own need (yes, need, not want!!). My daughter was born on Feb 12th, the last time there was a meet before this one. Thats a good excuse to miss it, in fairness, but only just!!!!! Hah, imagine if I had made it to the meet and she decided to arrive...............

I can always offer up my home if that helps and ye are welcome to invade it :D I only have a Gaggia Evolution though, some of ye might find that a little "beginnerish"...........................but I have a good grinder :D

My god. I am *gasping* for a coffee. Weigh in today for a fight tomorrow (you still coming Mr. M?) so I haven't had any coffee since yesterday at around 3pm! I actually feel withdrawal.

Would a ristretto push you out of your weight class?
Or are you hoping to take out the caffeine withdrawal psychosis on the opponent?

Best of luck with the fight!

What's the craic with roasting your own beans GH? I've seen popcorn poppers advertised as coffee bean roasters. Do they work? Does it take long? Is it worth the effort?

Coffee is a diuretic though AFAIK so it would actually help you to expel fluids thereby making you lighter for the weigh in!!

Where do I start on roasting!
Firstly I think it's worth the effort, I probably buy 80% of my coffee as
green beans for a couple of reasons. It means I always have a supply
of freshly roasted coffee at hand, I normally roast 2-3 batches of 150g
on a weekend and occasionaly another batch or two mid-week. This
means I'm not having to trek into town looking for fresh beans or having
to order freshly roasted beans online each week or two.

I tend to order 12kg of various green beans every 2-3 months from
hasbean as this means I have enough different varieties to keep me going
with just the odd purchase of freshly roasted beans from other roasters.

Green beans if stored properly will last 1-2 years whereas roasted beans
are really only good for a few weeks at most (unless you're freezing them).

I'm using an iRoast2 which is ok but I'm looking forward to picking up the
new Behmor which should be out in in the UK in about a month.

I haven't used a popcorn maker but have seen reports by numerous people
online who do so, including a couple of people here who bought Lidl
    popcorn makers to do so.
    http://www.sweetmarias.com/airpop/airpopmethod.php
Some people even roast coffee in a metal dog bowl with a blow-torch!

Have a look on hasbean.co.uk and you'll see they stock a nice wide
selection of green beans, it's nearly impossibel to buy greens here.
He also stocks the iroast but I'd recommend holding out for the Behmor
if you're looking to invest. Reactor has a great review on his site for
    the Behmor.

It's not rocket science to get an ok roast and with a little practice you'll
get good to great roasts after a while.

Thanks GH. Don't think I can justify another gadget in my house. I'll stick with regular small orders of beans. Cheers

I was intending to but as you may have guessed with my absence around these parts over the last while, it's a bit mad here. It's going to continue to be a bit mad over this weekend and over the next few weeks. I'll give you a shout tomorrow, if you're busy and can't take it, no probs. Good luck with the fight.

the iroast is doing my nut in.

Would you recommend the iRoast as a reasonable "beginner" roaster?

I read the review you posted a link (tyvm) and it looks interesting, but as one who has not roasted my own beans (yet) it all seems a little scary.

The behmor looks like it will take up a fair bit of kitchen space :pac: Happy roasting to all who purchase :)

I'll send you my iRoast when the behmor comes out IsThatSo?, I probably wouldn't use it after that anyway :)

It's certainly a great way to experience the roasting process. It produces some great freshly roasted beans, far better than a lot of the roasted coffee currently on the market.

    :o

Appreciate the sentiment, but would have to come to a mutually beneficial arrangement or the embarassed smiley will be there for a long time lol.

I have noticed that Steve puts up info on best roasting method for his beans, thats v handy for a beginner.

Am very ineterested to see how ye all get on with the Behmor, went back to look at RE*AC*TORs review and video again last night, just to refresh myself :D

Hehe. Thanks. :) I think coffee makes you pee more frequently but not necessarily more volume, particularly if you've built up a caffeine tolerance. I wasn't sure on that point, so I let it go. I probably could have gotten away with a mug in the morning and have peed it out by weigh in time, but I'm still learning this science of cutting weight.

I think a popper is definitely worth investing in. I started out with one, and though I tired of it after a while, it was a great experience. I have a thread here about my experience (complete with pictures....I must really love you guys). Just make sure you get the right popper. The lidl one turned out to be a winner. I still use it for popping popcorn. :)

    :D Psychosis for sure.
