Check out the new RTE Player which also features a very interesting addition.
RTE News Now is a 24hr news channel.
It seems to only have the main bulletins on a loop at the moment but certainly would be a good channel for DTT in the future.

It has been available on the RTÉ site for a long time but I agree that it would be a good addition to DTT.

    That could be very handy

RTE News Now really needs to be on UPC. All the bulletins are available ondemand via Player, so why have them on the loop. On UPC, you'd turn on, watch for 10mins then flick away. It's better suited for a non-interactive medium like cable. I'd definitely watch.

I'm sure RTE would be pointing at their wallet if UPC were to ask for that. RTE may well prefer to keep that DTT exclusive.

The only problem I see with RTE News Now, is that it is NOT Now. Basically, the RTE News at 1, is repeated all day until the RTE news at 6 and then that bulletin repeats until 9 and so and so on. What happens if a major news story breaks in between, will RTE react and change the bulletin.I doubt it somehow!

There are a lot of improvements in RTE don't get me wrong but they never quite tick all the boxes in my opinion whatever they do.

I'd consider News Now to be a work in progress. I could see them do good things with the channel and I'm sure they will if given the chance.

Interestingly, this is exactly what I proposed as a starting point for a RTE News Channel on DTT.

Obviously it isn't ideal, but at least it is a start, at least breaking news can be displayed via the ticker at the bottom. The service could be expanded upon relatively cheaply by using interactive service on DTT (MHEG5 red button type service), allowing you to read the full breaking news items off the RTE website and get detailed weather info, etc.

I think currently the only major thing it is missing, is an early morning news slot, currently if you watch it at 10am, you are getting the previous nights news.

Potentially in future they could inject new news packages into the stream, without a presenter (maybe the news package creator could also create a lead in for it), as they become available throughout the day.

    Sounds a good idea.
