More than half , actually so is the Rat and the Meerkat
Of the 22,000 genes in the cow genome, 14,000 are common to all mammalian species.

Anyway the DNA of the Cow is now fully sequenced i am delighted to say .

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8014598.stm
"We chose to study the cow genome because these animals are of such immense importance to humans," explained Richard Gibbs from Baylor College of Medicine's Human Genome Sequencing Center, a leading contributor to the project.

By comparing the results to other sequenced genomes, including that of humans, the researchers discovered how cows could help inform research into human health and disease.

"We found that cows are much more similar to us than rodents "

Dunno, look at the head on this one !

Maybe not in Tallaght where the Human diverges somewhat more from the Cow I find . back to science though !
"We hope the information will also be used to come up with innovative ways to reduce the environmental impact of cattle, such as greenhouse gases released by herds."

So now the scientists are working on a better Cow . I am quite happy with the ones we have now TBH .

Not hard to believe; if I extracted blood to the volume of half of the water in our bodies, and replaced it with more water, I would turn into water!

Mammals similar to mammals in similarity shocker.

At the embryo stage, mammals and reptiles are also similar.

I vigorously refute the idea that hominids such as Mary Harney are only 50% bovine.

Well we do get half our DNA from the mother.
So are you basically calling all our mothers "cows" ?

I believe we shared 80% of our DNA with the humble T-Rex, which is why our arms are puny in comparison to our legs. Our closest relative though, genetically, is the duck-billed platypus. Have you ever looked at one up close and personal? It's like looking in a mirror.

No. That's because we no longer spend a lot of time swinging around in trees constantly exercising our arms. Unless you're a gym monkey.

I do actually spend a lot of time in trees, usually outside the houses of comely wenches, in vantage points of supreme visibility.

I am surprised they did not take this joke a step further and say humans were half sheep.

All the evidence is pointing in that direction.

    We share 40% with lettuce.*

    * still haven't found an authoritive source but stuff like cytochrome-C and other biochemical pathways are very highly conserved in Eukaroytes
