Just got a ticket for the UCD Ball - I'm not in UCD, how do I get in?

I've been told that you don't actually have to be in UCD to go to it, but they also have a warning on their website saying that the security guys will be checking for student cards - how does it work? Is it like other events where a UCD student can bring 3 non UCD students or something?
