    or HP?

    Hiya,

The girlfriend wants a laptop so I'm doing the research as she just wants a nice colour (ahem!).

She has between €500 to €700 to spend. She primarily wants it for MS WORD and Internet searching.

She will also need it for storing @10,000 photographs and around 10,000 songs. She does not need it for computer games.

What processor should we be looking for? Intel or AMD? What version processor? etc

    Thanks a million.

There are plenty of good brands out there so i wouldn't even pin it down to the above few. You should be looking for a core 2 duo processor, at least 2Gb of RAM, and a 250Gb+ Hard drive.

I wouldn't get bogged down in brads what matters is the parts inside, as said above try get a core 2 duo and 2GB (2048MB) of RAM.

    Check these

The last two laptops here would be fine really. Of course add on €50-70 depending on the Office Package (Word, Excel, etc) you choose. the last two on the right of that link are good.

If all she wants to do is browse the web, look at some photos and word documents....

Then for gods sake don't let her spend even E400!!!
A netbook would have all the processing power to do those tasks, they are very trendy which i'm sure she would appreciate.
If you think she could do without a dvd-drive (everything's on usbs now) then i'd get this for her: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=448209 (it's a wee bit more girly than the samsung nc10) It think it may come in pink too??? ah found it http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-WIND-Notebook-U100-protection/dp/B0021AERP6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240713766&sr=1-4 both they samsung nc10 and msi wind give around 6 hours of battery, big hard-drives and almost full size keyboards.

If you don't fancy going down the netbook route...
Then just get a lower cost laptop for about 350 euro or that. The price tag doesn't mean it will be badly built, it just means that the specs(which won't matter for what your girlfriend wants to do on it) will be a bit less.

My mother sounds like the same kind of user... Just doing some internet browsing, watching the odd movie, keeping her music on it and writing some documents... I got her a Toshiba satellite for just under 300 euro and it really deals with absolutely everything so well.

Also you were thinking about buying Microsoft word with the pc...
DON'T!!! There's this office suite called "Sun Open Office" it works the exact same way, can open microsoft documents and when you send the document to someone else you just click on export to .pdf(acrobat reader) and everyone else can read it too!

It's free software which you just download from the internet. It just saves you 80 euro.

Please start your own new thread. No need to drag up an old one.
And also, we'll need to know what model laptop it is, and what spec etc.
