    Hi,

I'm starting a part time masters soon which will require block release from work. Just wondering has anyone any experience of studying through block release and how their respective employers responded to them approaching them for study leave. I have accepted my place but have recently started a new job and haven't yet told my employers of this situation, anyone with experienced comments or otherwise???

Similar to you, I’m starting a 2 year part-time masters in August which has block weekend releases on campus. These block lectures are over 1 weekend / month (All day Friday and Saturday).

So it looks like I’m going to have to book these Friday’s for lectures as ‘vacation’ days off work. This means I would have no vacation days left for Christmas… making it a very bleak Christmas spent mainly in the office! It’s only 4 weekends per semester but it still adds up.

Companies like ours do have ‘study leave’ days but this is when your course is financed / supported by your company. Unfortunately in the current climate, that wasn’t an option for me and the application was rejected so my course will be completely self supported and not connected to my work. My direct manager is aware that I’m starting this course but not I’m not sure if they know that I must attend lectures for one full weekend each month (includes all day Friday’s) So it will probably have to eat into my vacation days entitlement.
If I were you I would inform them. Your employer’s response can only be good. After-all, you have taken the initiative to undertake a masters while working - which will contribute to your skill-set etc for your work. This is a positive thing for your employers to know. You can mention when telling them that it works well because it’s delivered remotely with only block release weekends on campus so at least they are aware and in a position to know that you’re going to need these days off… somehow. At your expense or there’s. Unfortunately it will be at my expense eating into my ‘holidays! Good luck
