    Hi

Going car shopping tomorrow. Sick of throwing money ant my 13 year old merc. decided to go back to diesel. had a drive of a 05 peugeot 407 1.6hdi today and quite liked it. Might even go for the estate version. Anyone any experience or comments on these. Or even any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Have to keep it as much under the 2.0l as i can. Road tax is a rip off!

    Thanks :D

1.6 HDi will struggle in the 407 estate due to the extra weight. What you save on the difference in road tax will cost you more in mpg as the engine has to work harder to pull the heavier estate body.

I have that same engine in my S40 too and it is ok, would not win any races though. It was nippier and slightly more economical in the Focus I had before that mainly down to the weight difference.

so would it be a smarter choice to go for the saloon if i were set on that engine then or maybe go for the 2.0 model?

i think the saloon model looks better. they say it can pull the saloon no problem. id get a 1.6hdi anyway. also the estate will be saleproof in a couple of years. they never sell well and personally i hate ALL estates

I've got a 1.6 hdi 407 and i find it has plenty of power from the 1.6 Hdi (dv6)
    engine.
I like the 407 and had no problems so far, the car has coverd 74k.

The main faults with the 407's are

1)The lower Balljoints (frip joints) need replacement every 30k ish.
2)Both the 1.6-20 hdi have diesel partical filters fitted as standard and may need replacement around 100k.
3)The Dual mass flywheel can also fail at 100k..... like every other modern Diesel....
    Thats about it.....enough says you..

Like every car its about luck...:)

I get between 48-56 mpg mixed driving so its pretty good and the 20L hdi's
average around between 39-48 mpg but have more power.

Here is a pic of a balljoint i replaced a few weeks ago on my own(it's the black new part)

    Here is the old one....

Here is the bottom of the diesel partical filter (from under the car)

If you purchase a 407 you can joint here for free .....:)

    hope this helps...;)

I'd also go for the saloon. The father bought one recently and I also thought it would be underpowered for a car of its size. Its not. It pulls cleanly in every gear and has enough power for most. The father is delighted with the extra power and torque haven driven small petrol cars for years. He is getting over 50mpg in a rural area. TBH its the only engine to get in this car. Also think it looks better and is better value than all its rivals

The 1.6 will be easier to sell on as will the saloon varient so if you don't actually need the practicality of the estate then I would not bother buying one.

There are some great responses there guys. Thanks for your input. I had a read through your replies before i headed up to Dublin to make my purchase. Here's how i got on:

Went to my local dealer in cork to get a rip in a 407 saloon. liked the car but he was taling telephone numbers and the car was filthy and quite badly scratched. low mileage but so was the year.

Up to dublin with me then so. I had kind of set my heart on the estate. i often go to Atlantic and argos and have had to ask my boss for a lend of the van a few times which i dont like doing. I will get use out of the estate.

Went to the dealer in bluebell. The 2.0 estate was gone out of there but he had pleanty of saloons. A small bit out of my price range and miles were high. Really nice people to deal with and i wouldnt fear buying from them. Sales chap had all the time in the world for me and told me about all the different varients. Very little movement on price though but i wasnt going to waste his time or mine getting into a haggle until i had seen all the cars.

Went over the road to merlin. They had a nice 1.6hdi with low enough mileage. Considering the amount of cars that were there i think it was only one of three estate cars they had. Very nice chap by the name of Dave Sting from michican brought me out in the car. Traffic was heavy so i didnt get to give it a really good drive. The car was the higher spec ST version which i really liked but there were a couple of things i didn;t like. I thought the brakes were very spongy and travelled way to far for my liking. The swtiches for the car kit and the stereo remote were broken and it was a bit grubby inside. Couldnt see any fault on the outside. 11k for this car and really low mileage.

Went around to Sarsfield motors on old kileen road. I look at carzone quite reguarly and their cars always seem to catch my eye. They are all really clean and the pictures are properly taken with good discriptions in the ads. He was looking 10k for an 06 but it was the SR lower spec version. I took it for a drive on my own around the industrial estate cos the rep was on his own and rushed off his feet. The car drove like brand new. A few nics in the car but nothing major for a car that probably saw its share of supermarket carparks but clean enough inside and out. I drove off in the car for 8,800 euro after a long haggle and a drive off.

Over all i am happy enough. I gave it the power test today by loading 4 people into the car and climing the bandon bypass from the clonakilty side - no bother at all to her!

OH bought a 06 407sw 1.6hdi in jan from the north 9300 brought in. got to say its slightly sluggish pulling awaý in 1st but rev it and its ok, you really notice the torque overtaking much quicker than my 1.6 petrol primera overall very nice car, ex fleet from the uk (still had lex leasing mats !) OH put on few thousand miles on it averaging 50+ to the gallon shame you can't get co2 road tax !
I think the sw looks quite nice as well
