Lovely area to visit if you get the weather. Places like Lyme Regis, Bangor Regis are great. Also consider Devon/Cornwall as it's well worth a visit, the Eden Project is an excellent place to see. Woodlands over near Plymouth is a fantastic campsite & park especially if you have kids.

Many of the campsites in the UK appear to be owned by clubs. Do you have to be a member of the club to use the sites or do you just turn up and if they have space available, your in??

    Hi,

I'd like to resurrect this thread because we're looking at the cornwall area for this years summer holiday. We're thinking of going at the end of June as it might be a bit quieter then. There are 5 of us including a 15 year old(if he'll travel, not a fan of the campervan even though he has a tent for himself:rolleyes:), a 3 and 2 year old. That woodlands site looks ideal, it seems to have all you could want. The plan would be to get ferry to Pembroke or Fishguard and head from there but would like recommendations on places to stay in between, wouldn't do that journey all at once. We'd also like to take in Newquay. Any advice, observations etc appreciated!

    Thanks.

    Hi
We did south Devon last year as part of our 3 week tour with a 7, 5 & 3 yr old kids.

Stayed in Woodlands for 4 nights, good spot, your younger ones will get a kick out of the pet farm & rides there. eldest will enjoy the slides, etc. Great spot, but pricey for food...bring lunch down with ya as the Campsites on the hill with the park below, can be a tiring walk up..
Dartmouth is near enough with a Sainsbury's on the way there.
We wanted to use it as a base to see Torbay/ Painton but couldn't get parking in Torbay... park & ride couldn't take camper..

Stayed in Looe in Cornwall but didn't venture further south as we didn't have enough time.

Totnes is nice - stayed at Steamer Quay, not much there for kids

We joined the Caravan Club which gave us good discounts on the ferrys & discounts on varying points of interests.

Keep an eye out of the Car boot sales - massive one in Exeter in the mart car park.

not really true - Some campsites will give discount, Other campsites are for members only

With the Caravan Club there's smaller sites called Certified Locations. where a farmer will offer a paddock for a caravan/motorhome with minimal or no services, but the price would be £2-£14 a night depending on location & services offered.
But these are only available to CC members. well worth the €45 membership!

    Hi All

Rather than starting a new thread, Im going to tag on to the end of this one (from wayyyy back)

We are looking at heading to Wales, South England in early Aug. The plan is to pop onto the ferry in Rosslare and head to either Fishguard or Pembroke (ferry not booked yet).
We will probably be over there for the first 2 weeks in Aug.........do we need to book campsite at that time of year?

Anybody got any suggestions as to good sites.......we dont have a route or destination in mind at the moment so open to suggestions? We will be travelling with kids......oldest is 12, youngest is 6

    Cheers

I know I replied to a South of England thread maybe early this year. Dorset is great, the New Forest. We stayed at Hobourne Bashley - lovely site. You've the jurrasic coast (google Durdle Door). Great shipyards in Plymouth for HMS this & that (cool to look at). Poole is worth a look, a really nice quay there where they make plush yachts & a fabulous beach nearby. Bournemouth again has a fab beach and is a nice town (none of yer Blackpool awfulness).

One slight negative is the traffic is fairly busy at times - gridlock near Christchurch & hard to park in Bournemouth - they are a bit more like Irish cities than seaside towns we'd be used to.

St. Ives is a must in Cornwall - easily the most beautiful coastal town in Cornwall - Newquay is a bit of a bigger version of Bundoran - ok but not big on charm. Somerset is nice for a couple of nights when transiting to and from ferry. Stayed at Mill Farm near Bridgwater a few times. Cheddar gorge and the beautfiul town of Wells nearby - as is Glastonbury - the Tor and all that innit !) You could also swing west to the North Devon coast and the edge of Exmoor.
