Car ownership cost calculator

Like many here, I'm constantly checking Carzone etc to see if there's anything interesting around. I've gotten sick of trying to juggle figures in my head when comparing costs of one car vs another so finally put together a little calculator in Excel to work it all out. Simply put the figures it asks for in and it will give you the various costs over whatever period you choose. Resale value (and therefore depreciation) is a stab in the dark really but not much i can do about that! Economy is based on getting 80% of the claimed combined MPG. Hopefully it will be of use to people round here.....

It puts our 40K S-Max at €184! Your yoke can't really be worth 170K, can it?

Edit: hang on, I see what's up, it's ignoring depreciation in the cost per month. It also ignores finance costs.

So it says our S-Max costs €184 per month, but including depreciation, it's €660 per month. If I hadn't paid cash, you'd have to add the cost of financing it, too. A five year AIB car loan would bump it up to €746 a month.

So all you depressed people, cheer up, it would be much worse if the real costs were included!

190 a month, not too bad! But I have to deal with the shame of driving a Micra, no amount of savings can make it any better!

    .....cool: my Porsche 968 €311 p.m. :D

A Grey Poupon moment, methinks !!

Mind you, I'd edit the formula to show cost p.m. including depreciation - but that's just me. Or as an option at least. Otherwise the 'cost' you're getting is only 'current account' cost, not TCO.

Any of you guys coming out with sub €200 figures can I ask

    1) are you being truthful with the costs you are putting in, are you including all costs such as tyres, repairs, maintenance etc?

    2) what kinda mileage are you doing?

Even excluding the cost of depreciation, I am coming up with €340 per month for a Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi doing 20,000 miles per annum!

    I should get a porshe!

I think this is probably better allright. I've also added in a cost per mile calc which works out at 19c ex depreciation or 32c including depreciation for me. Thats not so bad (I think?)

    10k value now, 5k in 3 years time. 23mpg. 9k kms/yr. Tyres & servicing cheaper than my 06 1.9 Diesel.

Yes you should get a Porsche ! :D PM for details ! :p:p

Interesting that it takes depreciation into account. But it doesn't take loan interest into account either, so chances are a lot of people are paying even more!
