    Hi,

I bought a tv the other day with Freesat built in and i was wondering how i go about setting this up? I already have a sky plus box under the tv can i tap the signal from this or do i have to run a seperate cable to the dish or will it even work with the sky dish ?

any help is really appreciated - as you can see im fairly clueless !

    Cheers,

    Gary

You need a separate cable from the dish but before doing this take one of the cables from the sky box and connect to the the TV to test it out.

You will be asked to insert a uk postcode when setting up your tv (Panasonic, i presume). If you want UTV on epg put in a NI postcode. If you want ITV ON CH103 on epg insert an english postcode. ITV HD not available on UTV.

If you do not have a postcode for uk, just google for one. A london postcode i suggest is the best option.

Are you sure its Freesat and not Freeview? Do you have a model number?

No problem, I kinda thought that, thats why I suggested testing it before going to the trouble or running another cable

so how does the freeview work mate ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,150 ✭✭✭homer911

Freeview is the name for DTT in the UK using MPEG2. We are using MPEG4 so it wont be any use to you without a set top box or NP4 card. At the moment, at best, you will pick up the 4 Irish channels and some radio channels with a rabbits ears aerial, depending on where you are located.

I think its about time that the regulator or government does something about TV's being sold here with all the relevant stickers meant for the UK market. Lots of people will be buying MPEG 2 TV's thinking they can get the new Irish DTT (Now words getting out about it) or the freesat system (Ive seen a lot of 3rd party small shops advertising "FREEVIEW" in the window when they mean FREESAT)

Its all getting very confussing & possibly expensive to the normal joe soap punter.

Agreed, lots of confusion and the similarity of terms does not help. RTE could/should be taking the lead on this.

Seeing as that we have strayed into the DDT topic - will MPEG 2(Freeview) compatible TVs be adaptable to MPEG4 -other than by connecting an STB).

Is the incompatibility just a hardware issue or is there a software issue (or both) ?

Tried parents TV (MPEG2) and it seems to pick up audio for RTE1/2 from DTT. Is that possible ?

Also do the Panasonic MPEG4 tvs update Freesat software like the freesat STBs?

Hardware. The DSP chip can't do MPEG4 even if there is a way to upgrade the firmware.

Virtually all sets with CI slots (by law all sets bigger than ???") should work with a CAM like module. (It's not really a CAM, but seems like one to the TV).

The Neotion pocket Duo allows ethernet record/playback.

But a setbox basically replaces the VHS, one with dual tuners and HDD/PVR and series link/EPG scheduling like Tivo/Sky+ is so much better than VHS or external DVD/HDD recorder. Many will play your own files / camcorder / still camera etc files too.

Confusingly some pan-European models *MAY* be sold in UK with Freeview stickers but actually do MPEG4.

ALL MPEG4 DTT sets for anywhere in Europe or NZ will actually also do Freeview.

Being Devils' advocate Snaps, it could be argued that most people won't be affected by DTT and so mpeg 2 TV's will continue to work fine, unless there is a significant migration from Sly or Cable et al, nothing to suggest that at present or are figures on the increase?

The point here is that if you buy a TV in a shop - you should expect it to work with the Terestrial Transmissions - be it analogue or DTT. You shouldn't need to know more than the sales guy - nor find out 6 months down the road that it won't get free DTT. It's different if you buy knowing full well and accepting the restrictions - but how many people are told this or know it when they by a TV. There should be a Irish DTT Ready Sticker for all high street retailers - and information campaign - the DTT rollout is shockingly secretive - I'd say over 90% of the public are unaware.

    I learnt the hard way:

I bought a TV in a reputable electrical appliance shop in Crumlin off sun drive road, asked if the Philips PLF ****/D version could take DTT and was told yes. This TV was bought at the beginning of Sept 08.

RTENL in August 08 outlined their proposals for MPEG4 instead of MPEG2.

I read boards one day to see if my area was broadcasting DTT and then found out about the RTENL MPEG4 proposal. Luckily that I bought the TV after this press date of August for RTENL, that I was able to argue that I was given the wrong information and the TV couldn't do what the guy said it does. Got refund, then bought Pana TX-37LZD81 based on all the info I picked up on Boards.ie...happy days

But does your TX-37LZD81 work, Astrofluff?

I have a 46PZ81 which only shows the radio channels + RTE NL test since RTE made a change in the last few weeks.

Wasn't and not, disputing the point

It was working last time I checked...but will confirm later.

Without straying too much off 'satellite' topic, do you know if DTT is in your area?

This is quite strange...I use a set top aerial to get DVB-T and always got the picture with the aerial twisted vertically...

...when I turn the TV to 'DVB' I got nothing. Then turned the aerial to horizontal and got everything...the TV then said 'new DVB services found'. So I am thinking they have made changes to the Greystones transmitter/relay.

no worries. I bought my tv (MPEG2) when I was an NTL digital customer. I knew that it was unlikely to work here long term. But now I am Freesat/analogue. I've decided now to ignore DTT until the swich over.

It just anoys me how the state/rte are rolling it all out so quietly - when they must know so many people are buying tv's that are not compatible - there is just no excuse... I accept that to many people it will be irellevant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,708 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

If the OP doesn't mind I'm going to piggyback this thread with my new query which is Freesat TV related...

I have seen on other threads online that there is an update available for the Panasonic TX 37LZD81 and 32LZD81 but this is gained through satellite. I haven't used the freesat much in order to obtain this update. Has anyone updated via the ethernet and internet connection for the TV? What's you version...mines 2.601. Apparently 2.602 is available.

Agreed Martin, the level of knowledge on DTT and FTA DVB-S in some retail outlets is staggering, I mean as it is part of their business, how difficult is it for any of them to familiarise themselves with knowledge of the situation on this island?
