Should I give him a refund?

I sold a sony usb drive yesterday with a Buy It Now. I described it as new and quoted £2 sterling for postage to Ireland.

However I sent the drive on its own not in the packaging. I made no mention of the fact in the ad that it was out of its packaging.

I got a message today from the buyer who complained that it had not come in a box and complained about postage from Limerick to Dublin at £2 stg being high. He was suspicious on whether the drive was really new.

I wrote back offering to send him the packaging which I still have and send him the profit on the postage I made (a euro).

Do you think I've treated him fairly? Should I offer him a refund? The drive was/is brand new it just came without the packaging (which anybody who has ever bought a usb key knows is absolutely useless).

I know what its like to get a raw deal on something from eBay and wouldn't ever want to do it to someone else but there also caveat emptor isn't there? I've often gotten sd cards and usb keys from eBay sellers out of its packaging on its own. I thought it was the done thing to be honest.

    What do you guys think?

He's a moaner if he complains about 1 EUR difference in shipping fee (you could claim handling costs after all) but if he settles for the refund then it may be a easy way to buy a good rep point.

Cost of posting and packing is not just the stamp, it also includes the envelope and your time. This guy sounds like a muppet, I'd tell him though luck, but he'll probably leave negative feedback for you, and you can do nothing about that anymore.

If you described it as NEW, then maybe he feels without the box it is NOT NEW and NOT as described.
You said AS NEW, but shouldn't you have mentioned the box?
I'd want my money back, depending on the total.
It's petty , but hey there are so many different sellers out there.

Hmm....thanks for the replies. I've sent him on the packaging (which is that type of plastic box that can only be opened by a scissors so it's a little cut up) and promised if he's still not happy I'll give him a refund. He's left me positive feedback so we'll see what happens. He says he wants the box to give it as a present. Unfortunately posting the packaging has cost a few pence more and at the moment I'm only looking at a profit of €10 overall after paypal fees, postage etc. Not. worth. the. hassle :(
