dead battery or faulty psu?

I have a 4 year old dell laptop that displays an error on startup saying that the powersupply type could not be determined and to press F1 to continue but performance will be lower.
Windows would then boot normally and it would still recharge the battery.
Now though the battery is completely flat and not being charged at all. It still boots with the warning but if I plug out the power the laptop dies immediately (naturally if its flat).

So is it my battery or psu that is at fault? or is it both?
Also everytime i boot the system clock is reset so looks like the CMOS battery is dead too.

I have a 1.5 year old Dell Inspiron 1501. I used to get that message at bootup about unable to determine power supply. I went to Dell.ie, Support, inserted the service tag number and it came back with a list of drivers and updates for my machine. One of them was a BIOS update which fixed that power supply message.
