Muscle Tightening after 2 miles

    Hi guys,

In training for the Cork marathon, it will be my first and long runs are going quite well. However, when I do my temp runs I usually try the following as recommended in a book I am reading:

    1. 1 mile warm up at marathon pace
    2. 4 miles at an increased pace
    3. 1 mile cool down at marathon pace

Not looking for medical advice here....but after about 2 miles the muscle on the outside of the front of my lower leg tightens up really bad for about 2 miles or more, after that the pain eases and eventually goes, but when it happens it is so tight and sore that it affects my pace big time. I just checked a muscle diagram and it looks like the Tibialis Anterior muscle.

I always stretch a lot before running so it's not a stretching issue.

Sometimes this even happens on my longer runs where my pace is steady and comfortable, it gets sore from about mile 2 - 4 and then goes away.

    Any ideas guys?

The same happens to me, on and off. Never had an impact on performance so I never got it treated. It comes and goes. You should be the judge of whether it requires treatment.

Looked it up online and most of the symptoms lead me to believe that it's "anterior shin splints". Most websites recommend using ice packs after training, I will give that a go for the next week and see how that fairs out...
