    Lads,

I installed SP3 for xp this afternoon, and got the lovely bsod right on the xp logo.

just a flash for 1 second before it rebooted. had to disable that reboot on error thing on start up to see the message

it basically is a hardware fault. ahci/sata driver issue. i think the new sp3 has no sata drivers included.?

my laptop is a m1710 with a sata [of course] hdd.

so what the hell do i do, i have access to an enclosure and a vista laptop to try and fix this without a fresh install as i have too much s*** on my c: drive to go about a clean install.

    any ideas?

SP3 definitely has sata drivers so I don't know what is going on there. Go into the bios and change the AHCI to IDE. See if that does anything.

The sp3 I put on must not, or its a different one? there is no setting on my bios for that at all.

    stupid computers!

I can add devices and drivers with F6, but I need a floppy disk, of course floppy disks are relics now.

If I install xp again will all my program files, documents and settings etc be deleted. I will be obviously doing this from boot up.?

Can you boot in safe mode and rollback SP3? Go to control panel / add remove programs?

Give me the full error message.

    =-=

Does XP have a repair install option like 2K, does anyone know? Forget if there was, as I haven't needed to reinstall for a while.

It does but I've seen some branded copies such as dell ones that didn't have the option

I agree with previous poster. Try booting up into safe mode (if you can)and restore to a point before the SP3 install. SATA is supported in SP3 btw. If you re-install XP you wont loose and files and your settings should be the same. The XP disk you have should give you a repair option with you load it up. I'd go the restore point route first though then repair route then re-install XP as a final solution. If it boots at all into windows then its not a SATA HDD issue. Hope this helps.

Safe boot or any other mode was a no no

I cant boot into windows xp so couldnt go back to a time frame or remove the sp3

The error message was related to sata as far as google told me, no way around it tbh.

Had to format and reinstall xp
