Half Decent Instrument mic....

    Hello all,

back again to annoy ye again. I'm on the look out for an instrument mic. A mate of mine suggested the Rode N2 I think it was, the black one with phantom power. I have a shure vocal mic so my vocals are sorted at least, and wouldn't mind something I could use for recording acoustics, or putting in front of an amp or over a piano etc.

I'm not looking to spend a huge amount, maybe around a 100e, less would be great. I realise I won't be getting top quality at this price but I'm grand with that for now...

I did a search here earlier but didn't come up with much...

beyer m201 is a great alrounder for this scenario

    or an oktava mk12

even an sm57 placed well would do the job , or a 58

if you can stretch a few extra blips then the se2200a is a great mic and worth a lot more than it retails at. AFAIK paul brewer stocks them?

the RAT has a pair. Not too shabby at all. Good for things that are a bit bright and "speak" very fast fast transient and all! . Used on acoustic, overheads and the fiddle all worked out grand, not well bet grand.

BTW the RAT will be talking in the 3th person for the month of may only.

Also worth trying are the octava's.

I have a matched pair of SE3 mics. I'd really recommend them. Fantastic clarity.

    Audix i5. The 57's usurper.
It always amazes me how good this mic sounds on everything.
It is also my favourite vocal mic with a lot of singers.

Have to agree with Mick here.
    The i5 is brilliant.
I bought one after Mick used it on my vocal for the Nickelback cover.
Got it for just under €100 from dv247.com.

anyone know a website where someone has thrown up recordings of an instrument with different mikes.

Ive 2 electric guitars miked up with 57s after seeing recommendations on here long time ago, very happy with them but would like to at least hear others to get some perspective.

A good idea in theory !

However I think there are just too many variables for something like that to be of any real use.
