What type of television do you have and what cable are you using to connect the PS3?

Type of tv ? Ahh just a normal 32inch , not LCD or anything .

Would have something to do with the PS3 being set up for a HD TV ?

That's very possible. You might have to reset it to display on an analogue television. I can't remember off hand how to do this but if you search this forum there are many examples on how to do just that.

Edit : Just did a search and found the following:
put the ps3 in standby and hold the reset button till it beeps twice, that will reset it

I think you keep your finger on the off button for 5 secs or something

Go into PS3 setting ! Look for display output settings and reduce the quality !

Sounds like a grounding issue either with the plug socket or the kettle lead for TV or PS3.
Have you got lots of devices plugged into one extension lead?

As an experiment, plug in either the PS3 or TV into a different plug socket (not on the same plug socket face-plate) and see if the issue still remains.
