I'm buying a used car privately from a guy. I went to look at it today and possibly pick it up but the owner did not have the logbook or certificate of ownership(not really suer of the correct name). My friend advised me not to hand over any money until I received this as I wouldn't be able to tax i
I was eager to take the car asap but maybe he was right? So i said I'd wait until he had the logbook.
The guy seems genuine and said is selling the car on behalf of a friend and the friend had posted the logbook yesterday.

Would I need the logbook to get the car taxed?

unless you get documentation about ownership of the car dont give your money.

the guy may be genuine but for safety sake - "better to be safe than sorry" .... if its a genuine sale you can complete the transaction in a couple of days, if not then you saved yourself from being conned.

Might also still be worth checking out the car on www.cartell.ie - see if its been reported stolen/any payments still due on it etc etc

It is the responsibility of the seller to post the log book/certificate of ownership to Shannon to have the transfer of ownership completed.
You also need the log book to tax the car.

Where did the friend post the log book to? Have you given the seller money? Remember that there are loads of scammers out there!

It is the sellers responsibility to send it off to shannon however be sure to actually see it and sign it and if possible go and post it with the seller.
DO NOT hand over the cash without it.
This sounds very dodgy. You are giving your cash to a guy who doesnt even own the car? Are you mad? What if you buy it, and a few days later, the cops come along and take it away. You can tell them you bought it off some guy who you knew wasnt the owner ..... and you gave him cash. You would be arrested for stealing it.

Well It's a 96 reg so doubt there's anything owing on it. The guy seems genuine(I know that means nothing), young guy with a family, selling for his friend who returned to his home country.
    I've handed over no money.
So he needs to post the log book off? Could I do it as I'd like to see it, and not have him saying "yeah I posted it off" and then hear nothing for months.

If he will let you post it then fine.
Also, be sure to have the car inspected professionally before money is parted with (depending on the selling price)!

owner has left the country ...so owner probably wont get any of the money you give.....hmmm ...maybe you need to keep searching for another car, I would still check the car out just to ensure that it wasnt robbed etc. (supposed to be able to check that on that site - i think)

Well, it's only €600 so not really worth it I think. Passed it's NCT a few days ago so shouldn't be any major problems, though I know some things can slip by.
I told him to give me a call when he receives it and I'll go, check it out and post it I suppose.

You have to fill out your details on the VLC before it's posted off. Under no circumstances should you pay for the car until you've seen the VLC.

VLC is basically the vehicle registration document then? Is that seperate to the log book?
I won't hand over any money until everything is signed.

VLC is the Vehicle Licensing Certificate, sometimes referred to as the log book.

Ah ok, they're the same thing. I want to start driving the car as soon as possible, will it be possible to tax it in the next few days once the VLC is sent off? Don't know if I can wait 6 weeks as some have suggested.

You cannot tax the car until the new VLC arrives as it contains your details as the new registered owner. On average it takes 2 to 3 weeks, I bought a new car almost 3 weeks ago, new VLC arrived last Monday.

You could get him to tax it for you before you buy it. Then pay him they extra money when you buy.

As said above, don't dream of handing money over until you see the tax book/log book/VLC and have signed and dated it. Don't let your excitement get the better of you, worst comes to worst, there'll always be another one out there.

Just an update on this. The seller rang me the next morning, I went over, checked out the log book/VLC and it all seemed in order. Filled in my details and it was sent off.
He also gave me a copy of the VLC.
