a few people have laughed at this idea, others think its a realistic dream.
i have always loved the porsche 912. id rather drive one of these than any modern porsche, i just wish the was the possibility of updating it...

i ask users advice on how i might go about doing the following..

take the bare shell of a 912---turn it into a modern driving car..
new engine...possibly mr2 turbo...porsch boxster...with custom engine mount...transmission,suspension pretty much 912 as if built today.

any pictures of similar projects would be great, recommendations for fabricators...suitable builders.
    thanks

How much would you like to spend?

    budget would be around E25000

i had already thought of using an s2000 engine but research tells me that couldnt be compatible. iv been told that mounting the engine into the back of the porsche 912 would be the biggest issue, although gutted, there appears to be ample room to fit pretty much any engine in there at the cost of backseats...which i dont want anyway...im guessing the entire rear part of the chasis would have to be reinforced to accomodate suitable engine mounting posts...

i dont know much about geometry in terms of angles which a particular engine should be mounted at...does anyone know what leeway is available in terms of degrees?

i picture a 2 litre engine mid engine design...altered wheel arches to incorporate modern coilover....im not sure where to run the clutch kit...speedo cables...or the petrol tank for that matter...possibly to the rear of the engine...

2 nice 996 leather seats and a custom made hardwood dashboard with circular dials and up/down flick switches for the controls.

again budget may constrain much of the custom fabrication, though i think the original dash and seats are too plain looking as is

latest example iv seen was a 912 with subaru ej35 engine with custom support bar....apparently same engine mounting as the original 1.6 porsche engine...custom gear box ran the radiator to thefront...only cutting was under front bumper to get this in...gears from a 914...

a buddy mentioned that the impreza sti engine has the same mounting...
does anyoneknow what standard cluth and gearbox i could pair withit...considering its putting 270hp
the 912 weighs 950kg....with that engine in it....would be scary to drive!

youre right the oringinal spec weight came in at around 900kg but i reckon with the bigger engine...the support bar and welded support cage...extra bits and pieces 950 wouldnt be far out id say...

the cooling sys would be awkward with the cramped space alright...but that 912 with the boxer engine had the cooling system radiator run to the front...he cut under the front bumper to fit in a custom radiator...

hadnt thought about the rotary engine! that could be fabbut harder to mount???

do you know if the engine mounts are similar between a porsche boxster engine and a subaru boxer?

i hate boxsters...but the sound of its engine is sweet in comparison with the ej...and all the 2 litre turbo rally engines/hondas in my opinion...id rather not have it sound like every boyracer car in the country!

This is an odd one, never come across somebody wanting to do this kind of conversion...

There is a VW AE forum here with a wealth of knowledge to draw on. Good luck. ;)

And a 911 will have a reasonable if not very reasonable value at the end of the day compaired to a 912 or a modified 912.

true...i dont want a 911 theres plenty of them out there...plus id never get an unmodified 911 to perform like the 912 i have in mind.

has anyone soon the film spy game with robert redford and brad pitt...redford drives a 1969 racing green 912...its class

I can appreciate the will to modify a classic to make it do things it was never intended to do, see my site below. In my bug I have a "915" transmission from an early '70s 911 and a Subaru 2.0T (EJ20) from a WRX Impreza. I bought an adapter kit from DS Tuning in Germany to fit one to the other. You need to supply a 911 flywheel for them to modify though. After that it's a mountain of wiring, brake upgrades, suspension upgrades, roll cage etc etc

Are you up to the project though? Do you have a garage? Do you have tools? Can you weld? Can you custom fabricate stuff where necessary? It'll cost you a FORTUNE if you need to get someone to do this stuff for you. You can throw your 25k budget out the window unless you can do all (or as near as dammit to all) of the work yourself.

Anyway, whichever way you go, make sure to keep up posted :)
