    Howdy Lads,

Hoping to pick your collective brains so brace yourselves for what is an all likelihood a facile question. Using a Boss BR1180 and find the levels I'm getting when recording vocals with a new dynmamic mic(shure sm58) are very low even when the input settings are topped out. I have a Rhode condenser that's fine level wise... Does it mean I need a pre-amp or summat when I'm recording with the SM58 or is there any way of yoinking up the auld levels a little... I do tend to sing fairly softly..

    Cheers,
    Ste

it is one of the downsides of 58a's tbh - always have to crank the gain.
a pre-amp would probably be a bit of a waste imo, especially when the beta 58 (as opposed to the sm58) would probably solve your problem.

What are you trying to record?

Recording vocals- its for a rockin enough number and the vocal from the NT1 condenser mic just won't sit in right..its all detatched and lethargic(like the singer?!)... I've only bought the sm58 and its still "as new" as the gumtree gang say, so I'm sure I can exchange and upgrade to the beta if you think it will have a wee bit more umph about it...
    Cheers

it certainly has a good bit more oomph and from what I gather most people buy them for the same reason you would.

The Beta has a different sound, not just a higher output level. It may not get you the sound you want.

If you're really hooked on the SM58 sound, then you need a nice clean preamp to connect to the line in of the Boss. Focusrite Platinum is very quiet.

There shouldn't be any issue with level from Dynamic Mics.

As I recall there's a compressor in that unit , that's not kicked in by any chance?

    Lastly, reading between the lines,

"just won't sit in right..its all detatched and lethargic"

Sounds like a compressor might well help you there.

    Thanks Lads...

Its still all pain and no gain though... I canny get a decent level off the presets in the Boss unit, although a bit of auld diddlin with the compression definitely gave a bit of improvement alright. The impatient side of me wants to have a try with the Beta, and reading back through some of the older pro/con posts I'm startin to think it might suit my ehm, unique, kind of voice a wee bit better anyho. Cheers again for the collective advice!!
