Strickly speaking it means vehicles sold to people within the motor trade only. Therefore sold as seen & no warranty.

I've just actually seen a car I'm interested in at a really good price, however at the bottom of the advert; "Trade Sale Only"

Does this really exclude ordinary members of the public from buying a TSO car? Even if they're not bothered about warranties n stuff?

it means there's something wrong with the car and you have to figure out what it is yourself. also there's no comeback when you find out what it is :D

There was a thread about this only a few days ago. Do a search. If a car is sold as trade sale only it probably has HUGE mileage or is not in good shape mechanical wise. e.g, it may need a new gearbox for example and will require a lot of parts and labour that the garage selling it are unwilling to do.

EDIT: Any link to the add?

I wouldn't mind taking a chance if the price was right.. Get an AA check done beforehand then find out what needs repairing and likely cost to do the job.. Might grab yourself a bit of a bargain!

Sweeping generalisation! what a great help to the OP.

no offence, but if the OP has to ask what a trade sale is, then he/she may not be suitably equipped to spot a lemon.

    certainly agree haven't a clue

then run away, quite fast :D

These cars are usually cheap for a reason. trade-to-trade generally don't use carzone etc. to sell cars to each other. a trade only ad on carzone is just a way around offering any kind of comeback or warranty. It also gives the impression that the car is some kind of bargain too.

    Very, very possible.

    +1

Although we sold a "trade car" recently with absolutely nothing wrong with it, it was actually a minter. It was just cheaper for the customer, and less risk for us. Although, in most cases, if you haven't a clue about cars, either bring someone with you r just buy one with warranty.

You must understand though, you have absolutely no come/warranty. It's just like a private sale, "buyer beware" and all that.

I'd say it's more dangerous than a private sale, in the sense that the dealer has a good reason for not retailing the car.

There could be any reason. I don't think it's any more dangerous. It's the exact same in my opinion. You could get a fella selling private as there is something wrong with their car, but they don't have to advertise the fact it's a trade sale or the likes.

Edit: It depends on the car, IMO

I suppose the point i'm trying to make is that whereas all sorts of cars are sold privately by all sorts of people, a trade car is a car which someone who knows about cars has decided for presumably good reasons not to retail. I agree, though, it does depend on the car.

There are times when it genuinely suits a garage or trader to sell a car at trade but most don't advertise it. Too much stock, too old for a dealer to retail etc. Just the term Trade Sale is abused my some thus caution is advised.

Aye. I understand where your coming from. If it's something cheap, it just may not make sense to bump money into cleaning, servicing and offering warranty if it's going to end up making a loss. If it's more of an expensive car, I'd be something wary. `

I know someone who bought a car which subsequently stopped working. At the end of her receipt it said trade sale only. But she hadnt been told that at the start. What does this mean?

As mentioned it doesn't mean that there is something wrong with the car, afterall someone in the trade is hardly going to buy a lemon & they are in the sane target market as you for trade sale cars.
As mentioned it could be offered as a trade sale as it's something older & it has to be priced to compete with private sellers.
Very often they could be a car that was traded in & the garage just want to move it off the forecourt quickly, notoffering a warranty allows then to turn it around cheaply.
On a side note friend of mine in the trade actively seeks out cars with a problem in order to reduce the price to a minimum. He then knows the right places to get the right parts & the right people to fix it. He was the original "Wheeler Dealer" type before those guys on Discovery.
