Gammy indicators ('98 Fiesta)

The indicators on my '98 Fiesta have developed a problem - sometimes they stop flashing while I'm turning in either direction. The stalk doesn't flick back or anything (it will do as normal), they just stop and sometimes start again when they feel like it. When they stop working there's no clicking or anything. If I move the stalk about a bit it seems to work again, but seems to be related to turning the steering wheel as well. When they work the flashing speed isn't different to before (no bulbs are gone or anything). Headlight and wiper controls seem fine.

Any ideas? Is it the stalk that's gone or could it be something else?

Mashing the hazard light button a few times seems to have solved this for now. Apparently the switch contacts get dirty on it (as it's on the top of the steering column) which stop the indicators from working.
