MO for buying paint

    Hi folks

I had great results painting the sills on my MX5 - the paint on the car was in good condition, so buying some additional stuff using the paint code worked a treat.

However on my Merc's front bumper, I am pretty sure the paint is 'weathered' so need to get a match rather than just going in and asking for 'Almadine red, please'

Do paint shops like http://www.vinnybyrnestore.com have a colour chart you can use to match the paint codes visually ?

I heard that they have colour matching charts and guess the colour, rather then some type of machine. You could try Sikkens on the long mile road too.

If you bring a sample to them they can match it perfectly so if the bit you want painted can come off then bring it to them, or take the filler flap in.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get the new paint into an aerosol can, or similar, as I want to spray a spoiler and don't have a compressor/spray gun?

As you're in Waterford, Halford's might be easier.

    Thanks guys.
I have tried Halfords pre mixed paint going by my cars paint code, but the colour doesn't quite match, perhaps my paint has faded slightly.
I know you can get an exact match by bringing in a sample to one of the specialists (petrol tank flap etc)
So what I was really asking is, can you get the matched paint put into rattle cans?

If it's metallic it will be hard to match, primer will also have an effect on the finished hue.

    It's BMW 138 Zinnoberrot Cinnabar Red Standard Red 51 91 1 930 082
It's not metallic and theres no clear coat on it.
I wondered about the primer all right, I used the usual grey aerosol stuff, but the top coat came out slightly too dark.

I had an old jetta as my first car and, because it was white, it was a pain to keep clean. I finished up t-cutting and polishing it every few months which worked a treat. Then a coach driver bent the front wing in a nearly empty car park  . The body shop guy was adamant that the colour of the new wing wouldn't match and would weather in over a year or so. It matched perfectly and it seems this was because the t-cutting and polishing had lifted all the weathering from the old paint.

So, maybe you could get the paintwork freshened up with a t-cut and polish? If there is no lacquer coat, it should work well enough. Then the original paint code should match and the whole lot can weather at the same rate into the future.

Shes already mopped to death with 3M fine cut and polished to a shine with Meguiars:D
Actually you kind of have to keep on top of fading/oxidation with most flat red paint. It doesn't take long for it to start going milky:(

By the way, sorry for hijacking your thread Frank.

.......Vinny Byrnes do put whatever you want into a rattle can, not sure about other suppliers. You could try using white primer to lighten the colour.

Lovely car BTW, I had forgotten you had it !

Work away ! It's all good information. BTW I love that 6-series !!

I have to pop up to Belfast to pick up some spray guns/etc I bought, but once that's done, the bumper's coming off the Merc and I'm going to have a go at painting it "in the shed". The Almadine red is metallic with clear lacquer on top. Whatever I do to it, it's going to be better than it is now, in all its pockmarked stone-chippedness :D

However I inflicted some damage to the wing of my MX5 which needs painted now too. Might give it a go myself, but it's such a visible part of the car, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give it to a pro to do after I've done my worst to it. This is in red also, with clear lacquer on top. Can't help the DIY bug but to give it a go...
