I was in traffic today in Galway and the car in front of me was a Traffic Corps patrol car. On the boot, in the middle, was a black box roughy an inch high x 4inches long x 3 inches deep. The side facing me had a glass or plastic cover on it. I'm just wondering what it was? Is it a camera for scanning licence plates or is it a mounted speed gun? Or something else altogether?

    Just being nosey! Thanks.

It was an ANPR car. The black block on the booth is an infa red transmitter. There is a rotating camera in the back window that is night vision. Picks up number plates and can do speed checks.
