Anyone hear when google chrome is going to be released for linux? They said at the beginning that a linux version would be coming out soon and I signed up for an update but there's been no word on it.

While the world is still waiting for Google to officially release a Mac and Linux version of Google Chrome, the good folks at CodeWeavers have already created a Linux and Mac port of Google Chrome.

    link above.

I just installed the latest version and gmail's working grand. Very impressed with how nifty it feels tbh. Very impressed. Using it to write this post. You can get the .deb installer here.

I use chrome on windows all the time, and was delighted to see it was available o linux... Works great here (using Mint Linux) although flash doesn't seem to work for me, i don't know if that's a problem just for me or for everyone...

But it's a great browser, i loves it...

Installed there, and checked my Gmail without a hitch. I still will use Firefox though.

It's currently disabled by default. To enable it you pass some command line argument like --enable-flash or the like. Expect instability though.

won't linux chrome users always be second class citizens, waiting for months after the windows users get their upgrade... it'll be like skype on windows versus linux! I think I'll stick to FF (where I am an equal) to support it and help it improve.

Well don't forget that google are working on their own linux based operating system (Chrome OS) and afaik they use an ubuntu based distro in-house... So linux would seem to be on top of their priorities...

Are you lot using the hacked version of Chrome or an official release? If it's teh later, can you provide a link. I tried the hacked version and it was awful.

Just trying the latest version with flash turned on. Seems to be working ok, at least on a quick try with youtube. I like that it uses less desktop real estate than firefox by default (the tabs are right up the top). Would definitely seriously consider it for a netbook. We'll see what it's like when it becomes beta. Shouldn't be too long now.

Same sentiments here. It is a nice break from firefox.
    Long live elinks though:D

Well....I've moved a bit closer to using it as my default browser. It now has a quicklaunch button up beside Firefox and I'm considering making the switch, at least temporarily. It /feels/ very lightweight compared to FF.

Tried it a couple of days last week in work. I'll agree it seems more lightweight and the rendering of webpages is faster than firefox most of the time.

The thing that made me switch back was the multi-process concept. I was keeping an eye on the process's memory footprint, and it was getting quite large, even with a handful of tabs. The same number of tabs with firefox 3.5 was using about half of that memory footprint.

Interesting. I have lots of ram (4G) in this box so I'm not really too concerned about it. I have had a few crashes since this morning though.

    I'd the same problem

try running the browser with the command line switch "--enable-plugins"

If you open up a tab and point it at "about: plugins" you should see all the usual ones including flash mentioned.

Do you know what the logic is there btw? I only noticed it today in the gnome task manager. Surely it's threaded anyway?

Are you asking why Chrome runs each tab in a separate process?
Separate processes mean separate memory address spaces - hence tabs can crash without taking out other tabs.

Ever have a lot of firefox tabs open, and you visit one site with some nasty javascript, which kills your entire browser? This is a fix for that (obviously, more processes may be a little more cpu/memory expensive, which is what the tradeoff is).
