Passport Drive Problem

I've had a WD passpost drive for a few years and it has worked away fine with no problems. I recently put all my pictures on it while I was doing a reinstall of XP on my main system, now the drive wont work - on any machine at all.

I get a "bing bong" when I plug in the USB, and it shows up in the device manager as both a Disk Drive and a USB Device, but it won't show up on My Computer, I've tried a few disk repair apps but none of them can find it either.

I'm running XP. Any advice. Please???

Check to make sure its being assigned the correct drive letter

Don't think its being assigned any letter at all, tried it on two laptops as well as the main PC, it doesn't show up on any of them.

Bring up disk management in computer management.

Right click on the disk volume in the lower pane and click Assign new drive letter and change it to something else .. should do it

The volume doesn't show up at all in the disk management window

What service pack is running on your system after you reloaded Windows?
I had a similar issue to this in the past and once I installed the latest service pack(at the time it was SP2) then the drive was accessible.

If you've tried it on 3 systems it's unlikely to be a simple problem related to drive letter or service packs.

The drive is probably borked, not unusual after a few years. What is showing up in the device manager? Have you tried the WD diagnostic utility (available on their website)?

Before you bin the drive you should try a software package called Partition Table Doctor Google to find it . It will check it for boot errors along with other error checks. It fixed a flash & usb harddrive for me .

OPEN the case ,is there a loose data, power cable,do not TOUCH the hd pcb.
I think you,ll have to buy a usb to sata cable,or usb hd encosure.TRY harddrive freezer trick,if it works copy data to pc folder, you may get just 1 chance to copy the data.
